Brent Kloeble has high hopes for the new ReginaCadabra Magic Festival, which makes its debut July 26 in the city.

Kloeble, who is the chairman of the event, hopes the festival gains enough momentum to become an international attraction.

"It's an exciting event for Regina. There's nothing really like that around here," Kloeble said.

"We can make this a big tourism event," Kloeble said of the family-friendly festival, which will feature 10 performers throughout the week. "We know people will travel in to come see it."

Montreal: "Illusions" at the McCord Museum

From the McCord Museum:
26 MAY 2017 — 7 JANUARY 2018

ILLUSIONS: THE ART OF MAGICThe exhibition will take on the period of magic shows’ golden age and its advertising and promotional mechanisms that relied on phantasmagoric imagery. A selection of breathtaking posters, mostly dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, will retrace the social history of this still active phenomenon. These posters, halfway between art and advertisement, are magnificent, large format chromolithographs that immortalise the magicians and the acts that marked the world of modern magic.

Scott McClelland in the Ottawa Citizen

From the Ottawa Citizen:
“And over the heart area is a door, and this is the hook to the show. Now I don’t know how much you should write about this part, but basically, Vissago knows all. It’s groundbreaking and it’s never been done before, and it’s very romantic and will make you believe in the impossible. But I should stop there.”

James Harrison in The Barrie Examiner

From The Barrie Examiner:
Magic is in the air and the fingers of James Harrison.

The Barrie magician has taken pick-pocketing to new heights over the past several years and he will be performing at two shows this weekend at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts, including one the family and especially for kids.

"The family show will still be entertaining for grown-ups. but the themes will be more generic. It will be my fun and light-hearted, entertaining kind of show," said Harrison, who will be doing some pick-pocketing at both shows, but the family show will be more like an Oliver Twist version.

"I don't ever make fun of the kids, but parents are fair game," he said. "And the kids love that."

Mike Fisher in the St. Thomas Times-Journal

From the St. Thomas Times-Journal:
Making his Fringe debut, St. Thomas-raised and resident Mike Fisher is a fulltime magician who travels North America with his sleight-of-hand.

Local audiences know him best as Corbin the Pirate Magician. He’ll be on stage 5 p.m. on Canada Day at Pinafore Park. And for the kiddies, 2 p.m. July 28 at St. Thomas Public Library. His calendar is full. (Google him for proof.)

But for the Fringe, Corbin offers a rogue of a different colour, The Charming Cheat, a gentleman con artist who may or may not be peeking as he wins hand after hand playing a new effect, as they are called, he developed based on Texas Hold ‘Em.

Why do we like magic?

Toronto: The Circus of Industrious Fleas

Catch Eric Woolfe as Buster Canfield, the world’s greatest flea circus impresario at Harbourfront Centre Sat, May 20 – Mon, May 22, 2017.

From the Harbourfront Centre blog:
Step right up, Toronto! The world’s greatest flea circus impresario is back in town and ready to astound and amaze you with his menagerie of mite sized mini-marvels.

We caught up with Buster Canfield before his performance in the Studio Theatre this weekend to tell us more about the greatest trained fleas to ever hop the Earth and what audiences can expect to see at HarbourKIDS: Circus!

Harbourfront Centre: How did you get your start as a flea circus impresario?

Buster Canfield: Well, ever since I was little, I wanted to run a circus, but I could never afford an apartment big enough to live with all the monkeys and lions and elephants. Let alone the big wagons and tents. And then, once, I lived in this place that had a lousy superintendent who was too cheap to spring for a good fumigator. Pretty soon, I realized if I mixed those two problems together, I could make my dreams come true.

Harbourfront Centre: What do you look for in a circus flea?

Luc Langevin in le Journal de Quebec

From le Journal de Quebec (as translated by Google):
"People go to see shows of humor, concerts, but have little reflex to make the gesture to buy a ticket for a show of magic. They have the image of magic for children, but it is no longer the case," he said.

Indeed, the illusionist originally from Quebec explains that magic has undergone a turning point in recent years. "Quietly, magicians all over the planet are abandoning the classic image of magic, from the man in tuxedo who has a cape and who takes a rabbit out of a hat or who saw a woman in two, he.

Festival de magie: The panel that reads your thoughts

The Festival de magie de Québec starts on Thursday.  I am a big fan of their creative, dynamic, and often interactive advertising campaigns.  In 2011 it was this magical billboard. In 2012, it was "la disparition."  In 2013, "pouvoirs magiques."   For 2014, "le balai magique."  This one, "le magicien" (in English: The Magician) was released in August of 2015.  And last year was "The Mysterious Billboard."

For this year, have a look at "The panel that reads your thoughts."
