Mark Clearview and Mysterion in Toronto.com

From the May 26th article "What happens to Toronto magicians when COVID-19 takes the magic away?" by David Nickle in Toronto.com:

Clearview’s act is one that comes alive in person — a combination of standup comedy and sleight-of-hand work. He’s dipping his toe into YouTube with two channels — one called Noodle Boys, where he performs with his roommate, and another eponymous channel for his magic: Mark Clearview.

So, too, is Mysterion, in spite of his trepidation, moving to online video to showcase his talents and keep his creative juices flowing. He has been drawing on his network, including his wrestling contacts, fellow magicians and other celebrities, to take part remotely in a series of videos he and his girlfriend have put up on Facebook: Dr. M’s Mad Mausoleum.

Penn & Teller: Fool Us, winter edition

From Michael Close:
Here's some fun news from Fool Us executive producers Andrew Golder and Lincoln Hiatt:

Penn & Teller: Fool Us has been rewarded with a pickup for a winter edition on the CW Network.

We encourage you to spread the good word. We are beginning to look at submissions for another taping this year as soon as conditions allow. Shoot dates are uncertain, of course, but think September/October-ish. We will do this, however we do it, in a safe and prudent way.

Remember, originality is important, being entertaining is everything, and fooling Penn & Teller is icing on the magic cake. Fool Us alumni are welcome to submit tricks, too.

Submissions/magicians should use our casting email address:

Thanks again and warm regards! Send us your friends! Send us your tricks!

Welcoming a new Friend: Loran

Please join me in welcoming our newest Friend, Montreal based Loran!

I had the pleasure of first meeting Loran almost 20 years ago at the Magical Arts Festival in Toronto, and then being reacquainted with him through Sorcerers Safari Magic Camp.  His shows are consistently a feast for the senses (and often involve fire)!

You can see some recent video of Loran 5 seconds into the video "Magic in Canada - 100 Magicians Come Together for Food Banks Canada," at 1 minute and 17 seconds into the video "Magiciens au Quรฉbec - Magicians in Quรฉbec," and in his magical Steampunk glory at the 5 minute 5 second mark of the video "Pass the Map."

Learn more about Loran at his website LoranIllusion.com and follow him on Facebook.

Thank you Loran, for becoming an official Friend of Canada's Magic

Chris Ramsay in The New Yorker

From the May 15th article "Quarantine Is Making Puzzle Enthusiasts of Us All" by Crispin Long in The New Yorker:
The professional puzzler Chris Ramsay, whose YouTube channel has millions of subscribers, is sensitive to the power of playful concentration. In the video above, he talks about why people are enjoying puzzles so much during isolation and how he arrived at his unusual career. A magician, he found his current calling when he recorded a video of himself using the tricks he’d picked up through magic to unlock a three-dimensional puzzle that resembled a padlock.

David Acer in the Montreal Gazette

From the May 7th article "Brownstein: Is it too soon to laugh?" by Bill Bronstein in the Montreal Gazette:

While the Comedy Nest is dark these days, Acer has created another outlet for fans. Performance videos from the club are available on YouTube.com/comedynestmontreal and feature more than 30 of the city’s leading anglo comics, including Abdul Butt, Joey Elias, Heidi Foss, Derek Seguin and Harrison Weinreb. And Acer.

Weinreb, incidentally, has come up with this fascinating epidemiological theory: “This pandemic can only mean one thing … the five-second rule has failed us.”

Remembering Roy Horn

The ABC show 20/20 aired an informative documentary "Siegfried and Roy: Behind the Magic" last fall.  Clips can be found on the ABC YouTube channel:

From Greg Frewin:
... the magic community has lost one of the greatest. Roy was not only one of the best showman in our industry and one of the most dynamic energies to have ever been onstage, but he was also a very kind man to all of gods creatures. His work with his animals, the connection he had and the love he gave all of them has always been an inspiration for me. Very few people can have the spirit that he did. Roy is no longer with us but his spirit will always remain as powerful as the day I first met him.
God Bless you Roy for making millions of people and animals lives better with your presence. You will be missed....❤

From Matt DiSero:
Before there was David Copperfield or even Doug Henning, there was Siegfried & Roy. They didn't just shape magic but Las Vegas itself. Not many magicians of my generation or older who didn't make the pilgrimage to Vegas to see their show. You'd hear things like "what? a DRAGON picks up one of them and impales...what? how..?nooo". It was like that. They made magic a spectacle and a draw to Las Vegas. We owe them a debt of gratitude for doing the work.

New video project for Canadian magicians

From Brent and Sarah Nicholls:
I hope you’re doing well despite everything that’s going on.
I’m working on an idea to make a music video that is a compilation of Canadian magicians. It would be something like this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GElP4YdrBE ,
but instead of having you sing I would simply need you to perform a magic effect for the camera.
WHY?
My intention is simply to create a fun video that showcases Canadian magicians during this strange time where we can’t showcase ourselves properly. I may also add a Facebook tip jar that has all proceeds going to something like Canadian Food Bank.
IF YOU’D LIKE TO BE INCLUDED:
1. You must be a Canadian
2. You need to be a “working pro” (full time magician)
3. You must submit the clip before May 8th at noon
4. The clip must be no longer than 5 seconds (unfortunately longer videos will not be included)
5. You must include your stage name and city where you live in the body of your email
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO:
All you would need to do is upload the clip to your YouTube channel (you can make it “Unlisted" if you don’t want anyone else to see it) and then email me the link at magic@brentandsarah.com before the deadline.
VIDEO TIPS
The better your clip looks (lighting etc) the more likely it will feature prominently in the video (if you don’t have great lighting in your home consider shooting outside in natural light). Please know that music will be played over the video so audio is not necessary. The magic you perform can be serious, funny, kid-friendly etc.. or if you’d rather just smile and wave that’s fine too. Please ensure your clip is shot in HD.
NOT INTERESTED?
That’s OK, but please feel free to pass this along to any magicians you know who might be. My magician database isn’t the biggest so I would appreciate you sharing since I don’t want to leave anyone out!
I hope you’re staying safe and sane during this crazy time ๐Ÿ™‚
Sincerely,
Brent Nicholls
(Brent and Sarah)
