"The Stooge" to appear at Novacon Nov 12 - 14

To learn more about "The Stooge" go to IMDB.

From the September 20th Facebook post by Rogelio Fojo:

Magician Carisa Hendrix will be watched closely by the English now...

"At last, The Stooge will be getting a screening in the UK.

This has been showing at film festivals around the world for the last year or so, bravely masking up and mixing freely. It has gained a huge amount of attention in those socially distanced circles, but I can say it has been picking up awards and commendations everywhere it goes. Looking at the array of award bouquets, below, I am amazed, impressed and very pleased by the persistence of the producers. The festival circuit can be a hard road to travel, but they have done well in these socially constricted times.
The film runs for a mere twenty minutes, but it packs a lot into that brief time. It is an essay on stage magic and was for me when I wrote the original short story a kind of ironic commentary on and footnote to The Prestige. The story can be found in my recent collection Episodes, but that really does not give even a hint of the way it has been widened and enriched by director Rogelio Fojo. He has come up with real mystery, good surprises, excellent music and several moments of beauty. In the opening credits there is a classic sleight of hand, filmed in close-up from below: you see every move the illusionist makes, yet will still be baffled by it. Full credit goes to Fojo and his team.

I am arranging for a copy to be made available for showing at Novacon. This takes place between 12th and 14th November this year, at the Palace Hotel, in Buxton. I shall be there. "
- Christopher Priest.

Broken wand: Allan Slaight

Our sincere condolences to Allan's family and friends.  Our thoughts are with you at this most difficult time.

From the September 20th post at Magicana:

On September 19, 2021, John Allan Slaight passed away peacefully, aged 90, at his home in Toronto. Born on July 19, 1931 in Galt, Ontario to John Edgar and Eileen Slaight, Allan soon made his mark, first, at 8 as a magician, and then, at 17 as a broadcaster, hosting a late night jazz program Spins and Needles in his new hometown of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. At 19, he married Ada Mitchell, moved to Edmonton, started a family, and jockeyed between local radio stations before becoming the News Director at CHED in 1953. In 1958, he relocated to Toronto and became the Program Director of CHUM, the fledgling rock and roll radio station. Thanks to Allan’s endless energy, intuitive grasp of programming, and extraordinary ability to inspire, CHUM soon set the standard for rock and roll radio in Canada, and abroad.

Jonah Babins interviewed by Jake Strong

From the September 16th Facebook post by Discourse in Magic:

I was a guest on a wonderful podcast!

And you know what that means?

We talk about things I don’t usually talk about - so I wanted to share it with all of you.

The phenomenal magician, and podcaster - Jake Strong Magic, interviewed me for his show!

Jake has a podcast called Three Questions wherein he asks his guests... well… three poignant questions!

In the interview, Jake asked me about the misunderstood aspects of running a magic biz, how I prepare to interview my own podcast guests, and about my strengths and weaknesses with the Toronto Magic Company.

As you can imagine, not only do we go pretty far behind the scenes - but you also get some extra insights about getting more bookings as a magician and so much more.

Ring 235 hosts a park meeting and first virtual meeting TBA

TLDR:

  • Meeting in the park Sunday, September 19th, 1 pm in Victoria Park.
  • First Digital meeting on Wednesday, September the 15th at 7 pm over Zoom.

From the September 7th Facebook post by Graeme Reed, interim president of IBM Ring 235:

ATTN Local Wizards: I have taken on the role as temporary President for the Kitchener Waterloo Magic Society - IBM Ring 235. If you are interested in learning magic monthly with some of Ontario's finest be sure to check out www.ibmring235.org

Ring 235 Members,
Over the past year, our magic family has lost two of its pillar members - Paul and Romaine. Both were ambassadors of magic and were always willing to share with all of our members. I know for a fact their kindness and willingness to share magic have had a tremendous impact on most of our members. We were lucky to be graced by two professional entertainers, and they will not be forgotten.

When I saw John's email about the need for a new president and that this will take some work to keep us all connected during unique times, I felt a strong passion for taking on a temporary leadership role. As a virtual event producer and co-host of the Magicians Talking Magic podcast, I have the skills we need to stay connected through the art of magic.

This year will look different when it comes to club meetings and gatherings. We will have to be more agile in our team's functionality, understanding that we might not meet in person each month. I want to introduce a second monthly meeting that will happen virtually over zoom.

September is upon us, and I invite everyone to a meeting in the park. Sunday, September 19th, 1 pm in Victoria Park. Please bring a chair and some magic to share, and I know John will be looking for the annual dues. This will be a little meeting to reconnect in person. I would also like to embrace our regular meeting date of the 3rd Wednesday of each month. I will send out an invite for our first Digital meeting on Wednesday, September the 15th at 7 pm over Zoom.

As acting president, I have three goals for our club this season:
-Embrace the history of Ring 235 by adding articles to our website.
-Have more opportunities to meet virtually and/or in person.
-Increase our membership - share magic!
 Happy Day!
