Vancouver: 3 of Clubs 2019

Just announced, 2019 3 of Clubs convention will be held at the Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre!

From Eventbrite:
The 3 of Clubs Convention gets a new coat of paint in 2019 - restoring the original aim of the Vancouver Magic Circle’s long-standing “Weekend of Magic” to unite the magic community with education and excellence of internationally-renowned talent without breaking the bank!

The Vancouver Magic Circle is thrilled by the return of our very own Billy Hsueh and Alex Zander to spearhead this year’s convention once again. Ring 92’s last 3 of Clubs in 2016 at the “Pink Palace” in Surrey reinvigorated what a local convention could be, and they’re doing it again! But this time it’s even bigger, even better, and even cheaper!

We don’t know how.. but they’ve done it!
With an all-time low early-bird registration rate of only $75 for all 3 days (same early bird rate available to all 3 Clubs) our 2019 convention will be the most affordable in YEARS!

Studio City: Mahdi Gilbert lecture

From The Magic Apple:
Mahdi Gilbert will be lecturing at The Magic Apple on August 8th!!

Mahdi Gilbert was forced to reinvent magic for himself, literally redefining how a deck of cards can be handled. He performs wonders without hands and walks the Earth without feet and is a walking miracle to everyone he meets. A rare gentleman and scoundrel who palms without palms, shuffles without fingers and is living proof that nothing is impossible.

What will he teach?

“This is my intimate close-up set with cards featuring some of my most powerful material.”
Two Card Transposition, Ambitious Card, Triumph, Card to Pocket, Oil and Water.

Toronto: Nathan Coe Marsh lecture

From Eventbrite:
Tue, 23 July 2019

Over the course of a career that has included television, corporate events, cruise ships, casinos, trade shows, and comedy clubs, Nathan Coe Marsh has wowed audiences in 13 different countries with incredible original magic. And now, for the first time, he's going to share that magic with you.

Every item in Nathan's lecture has been featured by him in real world, professional performance - and he'll teach you everything you need to know so you can perform them too. The first half focuses on stand-up magic (with an emphasis on strong stand-up magic that 1. does not require on-stage assistants and 2. packs small and plays big). The second half focuses on close-up magic.

Part I: Stand-Up Magic
• A Spirited Opener
The startling visible vanish of a silk followed immediately by the production of a full shotglass. This is a 1-2 punch that, in under 90 seconds, grabs the complete focus of an audience while also setting the atmosphere of fun for everything that follows.
• Nathan’s Chop Cup
Nathan’s stand-up chop cup routine that incorporates a Michael Kaminskas touch (with permission) in a new way to dramatically increase the impact of the final loads.
• Bare-Handed
Any card called for is caught out of mid-air. The spectacle of a card sword without the cost, and Nathan’s new technique for controlling a named card from a memorized deck has many applications for both close-up and stand up (for non-memdeck users, this revelation is also powerful with a chosen card).
• Balloons
Stage-filling, astonishing, comedy mentalism that packs small and involves no on-stage volunteers.

Part II: Close-Up Magic
• Smart Coins
Featuring a charming, motivated, topical, and original presentation that steers clear of what Eugene Burger termed “the adventures of the props in the magician’s hands” script that is typical of coins across, Nathan’s version blends brilliant work from Roger Klause, Larry Jennings, and Mike Pisciotta to create a strong routine that gets gasps.
• Card Divination
Inspired by a single sentence in Juan Tamariz’ Mnemonica, this is the card routine Nathan has performed every single time he has done close-up magic professionally since 2004

Seating is extremely limited to this special lecture and seating arrangements are made based on the order in which your tickets are purchased - so act fast to save your spot!

-THIS EVENT IS INTENDED FOR MAGICIANS AND ASPIRING MAGICIANS WITH AT LEAST A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF MAGIC'S SECRETS.

Toronto: Marcus Eddie lecture

From the Browser's Den of Magic:
Wednesday June 26th

We are very excited to offer you another opportunity to learn from a fantastic professional. Marcus Eddie will be here at Browser's Den to share his love of magic on Wednesday, June 26 at 7pm.

Here's a little bit about Marcus:
Growing up overseas as part of an Air Force family, Marcus did not have access to magic shops or clubs. Using a magic set he received as a gift from his parents and the few magic books he could find in the school library, Marcus began teaching himself the craft when he was just 12 years old. Building his illusions from toy boxes, tape and everyday items, Marcus took his childhood passion and turned it into his career.

Today, he is an 8-time award-winning magician, including his win on the Syfy Channel’s magic competition, “Wizard Wars.”marcuseddie

He has appeared on “Penn & Teller Fool Us,” and is the creator of a large catalog of acclaimed, commercially released creations. Marcus also works as a consultant for magicians worldwide, including David Blaine on his television special, “Beyond Magic.”

Marcus Eddie's original magic will leave you stunned, and his lecture will leave you inspired.

We had the pleasure of hosting Marcus a couple years ago and his lecture was fantastic, and we know he's going to bring the goods again! His effects are off-beat and his methods are devious!

We look forward to you joining us on the 26th for what will be another fantastic lecture!

Toronto: Eric Jones lecture

I first had the pleasure of meeting Eric in 2011 at Sorcerers Safari.  His lecture is sure to inform and entertain!

From the Browser's Den of Magic:
Sunday May 26, 2019

We are very excited to offer you another premiere sleight of hand artist. The one and only Eric Jones will be here to share his love for magic and methods on Sunday, May 26 at 5:30pm.

Eric Jones is excited to share a combination of new ideas and some of his most popular, real world effects. Concentrating on hard hitting, visual effects, there will be something for everyone. Be sure to bring a few coins, a deck of cards and a pen and follow along as Eric leaves no stone unturned. Eric will explain all the nuances that make his magic both memorable and impactful and teach you how to do the same. You'll learn that The Devil Is In The Details.

He'll cover...

The Power Of the Pen - A killer production of a pen that you will use!

New Era - A perfect impromptu effect with a borrowed hat and a coin that can be done completely surrounded .  A real worker!

Hellhound Remix - A killer, hyper visual version of Chris Kenner's Hellhound Spellbound that will take your coin magic into a new hemisphere.

Audio  - A stand up routine that is a true homage to Nate Leipzig.  Four coins travel to the pocket one at a time. You will hear the coins as they arrive in the pocket.  NO Extra Coins, NO gimmicks.  Make sure you're wearing pants for this one!

Kabal - A streamlined version of the Collectors plot that is designed to be performed surrounded and under close scrutiny with method that will fool your audiences and with an explanation that will make magicians smile.

And more!!

We look forward to you joining us on the 26th for what will be another fantastic lecture!

Michael Close webinars

In addition to Friday night's Palming with Confidence* webinar, Michael has two more webinars scheduled this month.

From Michael Close's webiste:

MAY 3, 2109 -  PALMING WITH CONFIDENCE*
This sixty-minute webinar will provide strategies that will help you overcome your fear of palming.

Palming is one of the cornerstones of card magic. But many magicians, even experienced practitioners, shy away from tricks that require palming.  As part of this training, you’ll learn FOUR commercial routines you can immediately add to your repertoire.

We will also discuss important techniques that are applicable to any type of “holding out,” including coins, balls, or any small object.

We feel this information will be useful to magicians of all skill levels, so we are offering it at a very low price. Our webinars require no special software; you participate through your browser, and you can ask questions during the presentation. Registrants will be able to replay this webinar as often as they want.

Please Note: This is not a webinar on how to correctly palm cards.

MAY 5, 2019 - DEMYSTIFYING THE MEMORIZED DECK
Memorized deck work continues to be a hot topic. However, with the growing number of stacks available and the staggering amount of bad information available on the Internet, it can be challenging for a memdeck newbie to even know how to begin.

On Sunday May 5, 2019 at 4pm, I will present a new webinar, “Demystifying the Memorized Deck,” in which I will offer clear, no-nonsense information on how to add this powerful tool to your performing repertoire.

MAY 12, 2019 - HOW TO DESIGN A THREE-TRICK SET
After studying magic for a few years, most enthusiasts acquire some repertoire – effects they can perform competently. While we spend a great deal of effort learning new tricks, we rarely take the time to organize our tricks into an effective act or “set.”

In this webinar, Michael Close will suggest several strategies that will start you on the path to developing a strong, effective, three-trick set. Using material from his own repertoire, Michael will explain his thought process in assembling several different acts designed for various venues. He will also offer suggestions for further study and analysis.

This webinar is designed for magicians of all skill levels; everyone can benefit from this information.

* A special note about Friday night's Palming with Confidence webinar:
(Note: If you attended the Palming with Confidence Webinar on March 10, 2019 you are invited to join us on this webinar for free. Just email Lisa at lisa AT michaelclose DOT com for your personal registration link.)
