Canada's Got Talent: Getting to know Mark Clearview

On March 10th we shared with you that this season of Canada's Got Talent boasts nine Canadian magic acts.

We are delighted to have the opportunity to do short interviews with some of the acts.  Kicking off the series is Mark Clearview!

You may already know that Mark:

We're delighted that Mark made time to answer our questions ahead of his appearance tomorrow on the premiere of the 2024 season of Canada's Got Talent!

Who inspires you that is not a magician?

Andy Kaufman. Most car salesmen. It's gotta be hard to sell cars.

What is your first memory of magic?

I had the Wacky Wizard at my third birthday party. I don't remember it but I'm sure he was great. 4th birthday I had Mr. Oh (Owen Anderson) and I remember that a bit more. I've been doing magic since three, so longer than I can recall to memory. But many trips to Browser's Den Magic shop are cemented in my mind! Thanks Jeffs!

Who from the magic community inspires you?

At large? Penn & Teller, Mac King, Tom Mullica, The Amazing Jonathan. In my immediate community? Scott Hammell, Nick Wallace, Paige Thompson, my dad.

Was there anyone or anything instrumental to you becoming a magician?

Oh plenty! The book "Magic and Showmanship" changed some things for me. Derren Brown's "Notes from a Fellow Traveler" did a lot for my onstage persona. The aforementioned Browser's Den. Sorcerers Safari Magic camp. Couldn't of done anything without my mentor Scott Hammell. My father built my props. My mother supported me. She still does! She's actually typing this out for me. No don't write that. Stop it.

Did you ever get discouraged and think about quitting magic?

One time in 2020 the world ended for two long years. Before that I was a kid who was cranky and tired of it. Why didn't I quit? I can't. I've tried! This is an affliction and part of my chemical makeup. It's impossible to stop. Magic is all I know.

Do you have any tour or pre-show rituals you’d be willing to share with our readers?

I eat an entire bag of Funions.

Why is now the right time for you to be a part of Canada's Got Talent?

Because I wasn't on last season.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

If you give up, or stop following your dreams, I will find you and I will make you suffer.

Thank you Mark for making the time to answer our questions!  Break a leg on CGT!

The Legacy of Sorcerers Safari - part 5

Recap (click to show | hide)

From Part 1 of the series:

In lieu of a physical reunion bringing together past campers and staff, Canada’s Magic is hosting a virtual reunion of sorts.  We’ve reached out to the Sorcerers Safari community with a dozen or so questions to help bring us up to date on what everyone has been up to since our magic camp days.

If you completed our survey, keep your eyes peeled for your segment!

If you would like to participate but haven’t filled out the survey, there’s still time.  The survey can be found here:  https://forms.gle/umg77yj9QxUzfpm76

Thank you to all that contributed!

Mike, Jen, Sorcerers Safari staff, and alumni, this series is for you.

Part 5 features:  Dennis Gorya, Loran, and Mark Clearview

  Dennis Gorya
Entrepreneur, TidalCommerce.ca

Attended Sorcerers Safari as a camper.

Since his time at camp Dennis has:

  • Run a successful consulting company working with super star clients.

In his own words:

  • Camp helped me develop self confidence and a deeper ability in performance, sales and routine.

  • Favourite Sorcerers Safari memory?
    • The polar dip :)

  • Biggest take-away from Sorcerers Safari?
    • Attitude follows you in all that you do.

  Loran
Professional magician, LoranIllusion.com

Attended camp from 2000 to 2016 as staff.

Since his time at camp Loran has:

  • Opened for AC-DC and the Rolling Stones in Toronto.

  • Editor's note:  Loran was too modest to include his submission that he published the book “The Fabulous Book of Magic Secrets” available in English and French.

In his own words:

  • Favourite Sorcerers Safari memory?
    • Scare all the campers with a ghost story. Houahaha!!!

  • Biggest take-away from Sorcerers Safari?
    • Tons of wonderful memories.

  Mark Clearview
Professional magician, MarkClearview.com

Attended camp in:

  • 2008 - 2011 as a camper,
  • 2012 as a counsellor in training (CIT), and
  • 2013-2016 as counsellor.

Since his time at camp Mark:

  • Set a world record
[Longest Amount of Time Wearing a Straitjacket, World Record - 2014],
  • Moved to New York City and has has own monthly show Magic, Unlocked
  • Has performed all over the world,
  • Cruise Ship Magician on Virgin Voyages,
  • Appeared on Penn and Teller: Fool Us

In his own words:

  • Literally all of my accomplishments were made easier having gone to camp!
  • Scott Hammell is my mentor and we went to Sorcerers Safari together.
  • Aaron Fisher is a mentor who opened so many doors for me.
  • Favourite Sorcerers Safari memory?
    • My first time hosting the camper show. I remember my magic wasn't near as good as anyone else's. Those kids were schooling me! Even up to my counsellor years. But when I hosted that show I realized I had something. I could perform. And Lee Asher came up to me after the show and said "you're going places" the first of which was the bathroom to throw up.

  • Biggest take-away from Sorcerers Safari?
    • My friendship with Scott Hammell, Aaron Fisher, Lee Asher, Jonah Babins, Ben Train, Mind Bender, Keith Brown, etc.

My craft got stronger. My magic got better. I got funnier. The opportunity to host shows and perform and meet friends in the community. I cannot say enough good things!

Thank you Dennis, Loran, and Mark for sharing your memories!

Check back throughout the month to read updates from other Sorcerers Safari alumni and staff!

Mark Clearview in VITA Daily

From the January 24th article "Mark Clearview Makes Magic" in VITA Daily

You are quite the accomplished magician! From Times Square to Michelin restaurants to Penn & Teller, what has been your favourite venue or show to perform?

Some say I’m the MOST accomplished magician. But they’re very incorrect. I’ve been lucky enough to perform in plenty of bucket list venues. My favourite place to perform in terms of audiences and history is the historic Magic Castle in Hollywood. It’s the most magical place on earth, not Disney. My favourite place to perform in terms of trying new material is Caroline’s on Broadway in NYC. Something about a dark comedy club that gets my stomach all a flutter. And I don’t think it’s just the food in Times Square.

Do you have an all-time favourite or signature magic trick?

I was first known as that guy who spent two weeks in a straitjacket (setting a world record for the longest time in a straitjacket), but now I’m known for my stupider effects. Turning an egg into a rotisserie chicken or teleporting a signed business card into an urn of my grandfather’s ashes.
