Vitaly Beckman in the Vancouver Sun

From the March 24th post "Vancouver-based magician Vitaly Beckman fools Penn & Teller for second time" by Stuart Derdeyn in the Vancouver Sun:

“It’s ironic that I was performing in (Las) Vegas and went to see the last taping Season 7 of Fool Us as a guest on March 14, and the next day everything closed down,” said Beckman. “Suddenly, I had a lot of time on my hands to work on new illusions for my act, so when I heard Penn & Teller were doing the show virtually, I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s see if I can still impress them after a five-year break.’ ”

Vitaly Beckman on Penn and Teller's "Fool Us" [Mar 19]

From the March 13th Facebook post by Vitaly Beckman:

On this day, one year ago I was performing in Vegas and in the evening decided to attend the taping of Penn and Teller: Fool Us and watch the show as an audience member... it was the last filming day of season 7 and I was surprised to see a few good friends Shawn Farquhar and Clinton W. Gray being taped that night! Little did I know that from that very day I won't perform live nor see another live show for a year.

Coincidentally, I also didn't know that one year later I will be invited to participate in the Fool Us show as a contestant again... virtually! And so, I'm excited to announce that I will be performing a brand new piece of magic this Friday at 9pm on The CW. Wish me luck!

New York City: Vitaly Beckman's "An Evening of Wonders"

From the May 4th article "Illusionist Vitaly Beckman Will Bring An Evening of Wonders Off-Broadway" by Andrew Gans on Playbill:
Vitaly Beckman, who stumped fellow magicians Penn & Teller on TV's Penn & Teller: Fool Us, will make his New York City performing debut next month.

Produced by Daryl Roth, Vitaly: An Evening of Wonders will begin previews June 13 prior to an official opening June 21 at the Westside Theatre (407 West 43rd Street, between Ninth and Tenth Avenues). The limited engagement is scheduled to run through September 30.

“Vitaly fooled us with his humor and amazing magic,” Penn & Teller said in a statement. “We are so proud he’s opening at the Westside Theatre where we first opened our show in New York over 30 years ago. He is an ingenious inventor, full of charming surprises.”

West Bloomfield: Vitaly Beckman

From Detroit Jewish News:
Vitaly Beckman will perform Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts.

Vitaly Beckman easily remembers his first attempt at creating magical illusion.

Seven years old and living in the Soviet Union, he tried to imitate a magician he saw on television. The entertainer made a card castle appear under a handkerchief.

In a friend’s house at the time, Beckman noticed alphabet cubes and asked for a handkerchief. He put the cubes on his hand, assembled them like a castle and covered the pieces with a handkerchief just before his friend’s grandmother came into the room.

As soon as the woman appeared, Beckman pretended he didn’t see her and removed the handkerchief as if he made the cubes appear.

“She asked me how I did that,” Beckman recalls. “In reality, she probably played along, and I said that I created magic. I didn’t know why I said that, but many years later, I turned it into a career. For some reason, it seems like a prophesy.”

[Guest post] Can Canada's top mentalists fool Penn and Teller?

The following is a guest post from Clive Court.

--
MEET THE EVASONS---THEY READ A LOT OF MINDS IN WASHINGTON, D.C. BUT CAN THEY FOOL PENN AND TELLER?

TORONTO,Ont--(Sept.1)   The Evasons are a Toronto couple who make a good living reading the minds of corporate and political leaders on the U.S. East Coast.

On Wednesday, Sept.7, at 8pm.ET, they will challenge the famous Las Vegas magical duo on Penn and Teller:Fool Us! the popular primetime series on the the CW Network.

Recognized as one of the world's top mentalism acts, The Evasons appear to be part of an emerging trend which is bringing more magical and visual entertainers to primetime TV audiences in the United States.

Network TV series like NBC's America's Got Talent, CW's Masters of Illusion, and Penn and Teller:Fool Us! are introducing a greater number of magical and visual entertainers to North American viewers.  This, in turn, has meant more exposure for Canadian magicians.

Why is this?  Because Canadian magical entertainers are ranked among the best in the world by other nations. The Evasons are known worldwide for their second-sight act where a blindfolded Tessa describes in intimate detail the personal items held up by members of the audience.

Although based in Toronto and Annapolis, Maryland (just outside Washington,DC) Jeff and Tessa are in demand around the world as entertainers for major corporate and international conventions.

Born in Toronto, Jeff met Tessa in the early 80s while hosting a fashion show where she was a model. Tessa was working part-time while studying at Ryerson University. They have been together since 1983.

NB.  A great example of a Canadian magician appearing on a US network primetime show was Winnipeg's Darcy Oake introducing guest artists from The Illusionists (on Broadway) on the August 31 edition of America's Got Talent.  Among the other Canadian magicians appearing on US primetime TV this summer were: Shawn Farquhar, Murray SawChuck, and Vitaly Beckman (from Vancouver); Mahdi Gilbert, Neil Croswell, Ryan Joyce, and Matt DiSero (from Toronto); and world-champion magician, Greg Frewin, from Niagara Falls.
