David Merry in the The London Free Press

Meanwhile, Merry is also a regular on Too Much Information, and has toured with Wing and Collins several times.

“They are two of my oldest friends,” said Merry, who started his career as a magician.

“I discovered very early in my career that people won’t walk across the street for magic, but they will for comedy. So, I perform a bit of a hybrid. I’ll open with some stand-up, the do a blend of comedy with magic.”

David Merry in the Toronto Star

From the Toronto Star:
To that end, Foster has recruited what he says is an A-list team of about a dozen equally mature headliners to form his squadron of aces: peers whom he shared stages with in Toronto during those comedy boom days of the mid-’80s.

“When we started we were still kind of building it,” explains Foster recruit David Merry, about that era when seemingly overnight the country was dotted with comedy clubs and one-nighters.
Merry, who blends deft magic and clever props with an original, international, well-crafted standup routine, is also one the most universally beloved amongst his brethren — no small feat in an industry that’s fraught with oversized egos and infighting.

David Merry on "Too Much Information"

From Toronto is Awesome:
Too Much Information pits two panels of… well, panelists I guess… against each other. Riffing on the topic of the day – Politics. Sex. Religion. You know, the classic non-starters. Each team of panelists waxes on the subject at hand, vying to outwit, out-banter, out-shock and generally out-clever their foes across the isle. Moderated by the affable Norm Sousa (Discovery Channel’s Never Do This at Home) who at times looks like a mischievous kid who stole his Dad’s suit and set out to host a late show. His boyish face lights up when someone says something truly off-key and really lays into an opposing panelist. After all, that’s the beauty of a show that airs at night and the majority of your guests are comedians – there will be some sh*t said.

Sousa kicks things off with a monologue of sorts, testing the electricity in the water. He does a few setups on the theme of the show, to get the crowd warm & loose. It’s definitely not the daytime audience they’re looking to draw. The crowd in these seats comes ready for comedy. Familiar faces saying very naughty things, almost as if the camera isn’t even there

Classifieds: Own a piece of magic history

The following is a classified ad from David Merry.  For more information, or to make an offer, contact Dave directly.

Own a piece of magic history.

I am just about to buy an amazing piece of comedy memorabilia and am putting up a magic four pack of autographs from my collection. They are Houdini (a letter with his actual signature from 1926) and pictures framed. Blackstone Sr. (from 1949) an actual Merlin playbill signed by Doug Henning and Chita Rivera from early 1980’s) and David Copperfield see attached pictures. I thought I’d put it out to my friends in Canada first before the open market $2500.

Random thoughts about 90th birthday parties

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of attending two 90th birthday celebrations, both for Toronto's very own Gordon Precious.  Gordon is an absolute gentleman in every sense of the word.  I've known Gordon for close to 20 years and in that time he's been consistently positive, welcoming and encouraging.  He's younger at heart than many people of my generation.  Simply having Gordon in your life, makes you a better person.

First up was the Browser's event:
  • The event was extremely well attended.  There were people in attendance that I didn't see that day -- it was that packed.
  • It was fabulous showing of friendship from the magic community.  (Folks drove in from Kitchener, Hamilton and Ottawa!)
  • No one does the the Vanishing Birdcage like Gordon.
  • David Merry did a set that kept everyone in stitches.
  • Jeff always throws wonderful celebration parties!
  • I am incapable of entering a magic shop without leaving with a purchase.
  • Read more about it (and see pictures) at the Browser's Den blog.

And later in the week, a celebration by Ring 17 at their year end banquet:
  • The banquet was also very well attended.  (Folks also drove in from Kitchener, Hamilton and Ottawa!)
  • Gordon did a wonderful set, entertaining young and old alike!
  • There was a Zig-Zag illusion that went off without a hitch.
  • I had no idea Gordon could breathe fire.
  • Paul Wildbaum and Bill Abbott were entertaining, as always.
  • See photos at the Ring 17 Facebook group.

Wonderful celebrations for a wonderful person!  Happy birthday Gordon!
