Edmonton: Building Skills as Professional Artists - A Public Seminar

Sheldon Casavant will be speaking at "Building Skills as Professional Artists - A Public Seminar."

From Evenbrite:

As an artist, you are a person driven by passion. Whether you came across your art form by happenstance or by choice, you have given it careful thought and finally decided to go the distance! You have spent countless hours developing your craft, honing your skills and technique. Now that you feel ready, how do you bring your art into the world? Who needs the art, and how will they support me to make it? How do I get the most out of my craft, and how can I create for the rest of my life?

In other words, how does one start the path pursuing a career in the arts? At the surface these questions may seem straightforward, but the answers are a new way of thinking entirely. In the real world, we must put the same care and attention towards our professionalism just as much as our art.

Mahdi Gilbert in CBC Arts

From the March 18th article "People told Mahdi the Magician his body would make his dreams impossible — but he refused to quit" in CBC Arts:
"One of my teachers told me I shouldn't use my body because my body 'isn't any good,'" the Canadian magician, who was born without hands or feet, tells filmmaker Jason D'Souza. "[They said] that I should use my mind because my mind is still good."

But then, at 17, he found something to be passionate about: slight [sic] of hand. Despite discovering that most of the literature about his newfound passion were written by two-handed magicians for other two-handed magicians, Gilbert would make it work for him and practice through the night.

Sending healing thoughts to Evelyn Matlin

For those of you who don't already know, have a read of Evelyn Matlin's March 11th post "Who’s The Magician Here?" at the Perfect Magic blog.
So if any of you don’t know yet, and are wondering why I haven’t written anything since January, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the beginning of February. To make a long story as short as possible, I think you know that Phil broke his ankle in late December and was working at home all this time. I looked after the shop all of January. I was used to running up and down the stairs of the shop and would take parcels to send out at the Pharmaprix Post Office across the street. I thought nothing of it.

Then, in early February I noticed I was out of breath when I got to the top of the stairs.

Welcoming a new Friend: James Renoire

Please join me in welcoming our newest Friend, James Renoire!

When a boyhood interest in Magic intersected with landing the lead part of a magician in a school production, James was firmly sent on his journey in the performing arts.

Actor, Author, Chavez student, Composer, Magician, Musician, Producer, James has loved them all - but now he’s semi-retired, and has reprioritized Magic as his primary passion. Instrumental in the 2015 revival of Montreal's IBM Ring #62 and founder of the Canadian College of Magic℠ James also heads up the Magicians.Agency as well as the Abracadabra.Boutique.

Follow James on Instagram or visit his website at Renoire.com

Thank you James, for befriending Canada's Magic!

Toronto: From Fair to Foul

From the Browser's Den of Magic:
Sunday, March 24, 2019

This is a 90 minute historical lecture about magicians during the 1800’s. It explains how they transformed from distrusted street performers at fairs to performers of skill. And ended the century by debunking the foul spiritualists. The lecture covers many incredible people such as James and John Rannie, Richard Potter...the first magicians in America.

Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin the French magician who turned magic into a theatrical art form, John Nevil Maskeylne, Spiritualists like the Fox sisters from New York, and much more.

Some of their methods and tricks they used will be discussed.

Canadian connections are emphasized and many interesting items will be displayed. This lecture is NOT a magic show but includes a few historical magic tricks throughout the lecture.

CBC's The Amazing and Astounding Invisible Women of Magic

From the February 22nd post "The women of magic are much more than 'lovely assistants'" CBC Radio:
Sawing a woman in half, a hemicorporectomy, is a classic illusion. And a classic role for women in magic — the pretty helpmeet, assisting men as they dazzle and enchant their audiences. But women are busting out of the boxes.

Frank Faulk's documentary, which was first broadcast a decade ago, is called "The Amazing and Astounding Invisible Women of Magic."
