Review: "A Series of Unfortunate Effects"

From the Magic Junkies:
Coming in at around 90 minutes, A Series of Unfortunate Effects is a fun, engaging and wonderfully unique instructional DVD featuring some of the best card magic I’ve seen in some time. The movie (yep, I’m calling it a movie) features appearances by Lee Asher, Jeff Hinchliffe, Glenn West, Chris Westfall, plus the creators Chris Mayhew and Ben Train. Bill Abbott even makes an appearance as a maniacal card collector – hey if the shoe fits  Even without the card routines and explanations, I thought the movie was really fun with several laugh out loud moments. The chemistry between Chris Mayhew and Ben Train provides an enjoyable romp through underground card magic. (I’ll take this moment to mention that Chris Mayhew cracks me up!) The video itself is shot in HD and edited beautifully, with great attention to detail throughout. The appearances and card routines are just icing on the proverbial cake. It is a creative adventure that is a joy to watch.

Canadians on the IBM convention schedule for 2015

Updated at 5pm to add:
- I was just reminded that this considered to be outgoing President Shawn Farquhar's convention so it would be awesome to have a strong Canadian contingent to show our support.
- Michael Dardant, from New Orleans who won the CAMaraderie close up competition at our last convention will also be there.
(Thanks for the note Joan!)

On the schedule, I spy Bill Abbott as well as the Outerbridges.

Who'd I miss?

Fun Family Day at Dave and Busters

Ontario's Family Day long weekend was just over a week ago.  (As a bonus for the kids it was an extra long, long weekend because of a school Professional Activities day tacked onto the Friday before.)  Going into the weekend, I had high hopes for a low key, low stress relaxing weekend that would include outdoor activities such as skating and tobogganing.

The Universe had other ideas.  To be fair, there was lots of sleeping in and it was very low key and low stress.  (Thank you to the public library for letting us borrow from your DVD collection.)  The weather outside, however, was close to minus 400 degrees with the windchill and I am not a fan of doing anything in that kind of cold.

On the weekend a Tweet from Bill Abbott caught my attention:
"CHICO IS BACK!!! 2 shows only. This Monday 2pm and 4pm"

How could I resist?

We arrived at Dave and Busters an hour before showtime and were warmly greeted at the door by Ben Train.  After we bought our tickets (bring cash), we went into the theatre to find our seats and settle in.  I was very impressed to find that the theatre was almost half full already.  We ordered some yummy food and passed the time by teaching Kidlet how to do a Bruce Posgate knot with the table decor.

Some notes on the show:
  • About 10 minutes before showtime, the room was completely sold out.
  • Bobby Motta did a great job of warming up the crowd.
  • Bill Abbott was in fine form.
  • Kidlet has seen an effect created by Bill, performed a number of times by people who have purchased his product.  It was very educational for Kidlet to see Bill perform it himself!  (And it's always entertaining.)
  • It was a delight for me to finally see Bill live, performing someThing I had only seen him do on video.  (And it looks great live!)
  • After all these years, Chico is just as precocious as ever.
  • Some magical items were on sale after the show ... parents bring some extra cash.
  • The show was very entertaining and well worth the ticket price!

As a bonus, on your way out after the show everyone receives a game card which gives you unlimited play on all the non-ticketed games in The Midway.  Needless to say we spent a good chunk of time exploring all the offerings!  (And got some virtual snowboarding and skiing in to boot.)

Thank you Ben, Bill, Bobby and Dave & Busters for being a part of such a fabulous Family Day outing!

Random thoughts about 90th birthday parties

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of attending two 90th birthday celebrations, both for Toronto's very own Gordon Precious.  Gordon is an absolute gentleman in every sense of the word.  I've known Gordon for close to 20 years and in that time he's been consistently positive, welcoming and encouraging.  He's younger at heart than many people of my generation.  Simply having Gordon in your life, makes you a better person.

First up was the Browser's event:
  • The event was extremely well attended.  There were people in attendance that I didn't see that day -- it was that packed.
  • It was fabulous showing of friendship from the magic community.  (Folks drove in from Kitchener, Hamilton and Ottawa!)
  • No one does the the Vanishing Birdcage like Gordon.
  • David Merry did a set that kept everyone in stitches.
  • Jeff always throws wonderful celebration parties!
  • I am incapable of entering a magic shop without leaving with a purchase.
  • Read more about it (and see pictures) at the Browser's Den blog.

And later in the week, a celebration by Ring 17 at their year end banquet:
  • The banquet was also very well attended.  (Folks also drove in from Kitchener, Hamilton and Ottawa!)
  • Gordon did a wonderful set, entertaining young and old alike!
  • There was a Zig-Zag illusion that went off without a hitch.
  • I had no idea Gordon could breathe fire.
  • Paul Wildbaum and Bill Abbott were entertaining, as always.
  • See photos at the Ring 17 Facebook group.

Wonderful celebrations for a wonderful person!  Happy birthday Gordon!
