Alexandra: Inspirational Canadian Magician

Second in this year's Inspirational Canadian Magician Showcase, is Alexandra!

Alexandra: Inspirational Canadian Magician

Alexandra: Inspirational Canadian Magician.

Over the last fifteen years, Alexandra has been Greg Frewin's main assistant, the backbone of his show. But guess what? As of 2023, she's embarked on a fascinating new journey as a magician, and let me tell you, she is fantastic. Just last week, she pulled off an incredible feat
– she fooled none other than Penn & Teller.

This isn't just a career change; it's a captivating
transformation. From assistant extraordinaire to a magician who can leave even the masters of magic in awe. It's not every day you witness
such a remarkable shift, and I can't wait to see where Alex goes.

Submitted by Lee Asher

From the July 26th Facebook post by the Greg Frewin Theatrical Centre:

The reason for this change is that our main magician, Greg Frewin, has made a much-anticipated return to the Greg Frewin Theatre for a limited time. Niagara Falls: Greg Frewin stepping back, Christian Mascia stepping forward

From the September 16th article "After 18 years, Niagara Falls magician Greg Frewin passing on the wand" by John Law at the Niagara Fall Review:

After 18 years of the nightly grind, one of Canada’s most decorated magic men is passing the wand. Sometime over the next month, he will yield the stage to 24-year-old rising star Christian Mascia at his Ellen Avenue theatre.

And while he hesitates using the ‘r’ word — retirement — Frewin says his days of regular performing are winding down. And it took a forced break to convince him.

From the September 20th Facebook post by Greg Frewin Theatre:

"Greg will be coming back from time to time to perform with Christian Mascia but for the most part yes, he is retiring from the stage."

"The new show Wonder will begin October 13, 2022. Hope that is helpful for you. "

FISM 2022 in CBC News

From the July 29th upload "World’s best magicians gather in Canada for championship" by CBC News: The National:

From the July 28th article "The best magicians in the world are gathering in Canada this week" by Joseph Pugh at the CBC:

Two Canadians are competing this year, including Yannick Lacroix from Quebec and Cobalt, who will be competing in the close-up card magic category.

"I'm excitedly terrified," Cobalt told CBC News. He qualified for the championship after competing in an event last fall for the first time.

The Toronto-based magician says there is added stress and excitement when thinking about the audience.

"It's literally every great magician I grew up reading about … or ask[ed] for an autograph who's going to be in there now watching me do this act."

There's a lot on the line for the magicians, according to Canadian illusionist Greg Frewin.

"If you place even in the top three of this competition, your life changes," he says.

Frewin speaks from experience having won first place in the general magic category at the 1994 world championships in Yokohama, Japan. He currently performs shows at the Greg Frewin theatre in Niagara Falls, Ont., and has been training the next generation of magicians. One of his students, Ding Yang of China, is also competing at FISM.

"I can't give away what she does, but I will say this, there is one part of her act that nobody, male or female, has ever done and probably won't do for a long time because of the skill level and the skill set besides magic that it takes."

His winning streak recently culminated with his 2009 win of the Magician of the Year award at the World Magic awards, effectively ranking him as the world’s top illusionist.

In his professional career, Frewin has performed live all over the world, from Japan to Monte Carlo, cruise ships on the high seas to the Vegas Strip.

Greg Frewin in the St. Catherines Standard

A reminder that Greg's hosting his second International Stars of Magic show livestream April 15 @7PM EST to benefit the Niagara SPCA Humane Society on his YouTube channel at:

https://youtu.be/6moYdHS8TYc

From the April 13th article "Magician Greg Frewin on his anger over ‘Tiger King’" by John Law in The Standard:
Instead of shock and outrage over Joe Exotic's behaviour or whether Baskins killed her husband (and fed him to tigers), Frewin wishes viewers keyed in on a statistic the show shared in its final episode: There are 8,000 tigers in captivity in the United States, and only 4,000 left in the wild.

"Why is there only 4,000 tigers left in the wild, and we're worried about 'Did Carole Baskins kill her husband?'" he says. "Why aren't people talking about that? That's the part I'm interested in.

"Those characters are so extreme that the facts that are important got completely brushed over. All we talk about are how crazy they are, how abusive this and that. There's a whole bunch of stuff in this show that's been completely missed."

Greg Frewin in the Metrolinx News

From the May 16th article "No illusion – Magician Greg Frewin reveals Niagara Falls spectacles GO customers need to unlock" by Sara Wilbur in the Metrolinx News:
Greg Frewin has pulled off one of the most elaborate feats in the history of prestidigitation. He’s managed to quietly hide a very Canadian existence within a bigger-than-life Niagara Falls spectacle.

The 52-year-old magician seems as much a modern staple of Niagara Falls as, say, running water. His production, inside a local 700-seat theatre named after him, is based on decades of performances around the world that have won him a magic box full of trophies, including the prestigious Magician of the Year Award at the World Magic Awards, as well as a first place for the International Federation of Magic Societies.
