Montreal Magic Jam: Steph Lac and Derrick Chung lecture [Dec 2]

From the December 2nd Facebook event by the Montreal Magic Jam:

Hey gang,

Marc here, taking over the Montreal Magic Jam mailing list to tell you about an event you absolutely don’t want to miss.

After a bit of friendly arm-twisting, I’ve convinced my good friends Steph Lac (of Slim Card Co.) and Chung (from the legendary duo McSorley & Chung) to bring their one-of-a-kind lecture to the Montreal Magic Jam! These two are not only top-notch magicians, but they also have impeccable taste in both magic and whiskey—I can personally vouch for that! They’ve already showcased their lecture for some of the brightest minds in the U.S., and I wasn’t about to let them skip over their hometown without sharing this with us!

Here’s the scoop:
đź“… When: Monday, December 2

Steph and Chung have each been doing amazing work for years, and now they’re teaming up officially for the first time. Steph will show off his skills in crafting gaffs and the underground world of card and dice manipulation—he’s even worked with legends like Sal Piacente and the late Fast Jack Farrell.
And Chung? He’s been a key player in Montreal’s magic scene for over two decades, creating some serious magic behind the scenes. His tricks have even made it into The Nacho Card Notes, which has been getting rave reviews. Between the two of them, expect some deep insights and practical tips you can put into action.

Bonjour! Hi! This lecture will be fully bilingual, with Steph presenting in French and Chung in English. Very Montreal, right?

Bonus! They’ll also have an exclusive set of lecture notes (more like a mini-book!) created by Sophie-Anne Vachon from Conundrum Magazine, available only at this event.

With two incredible lectures for the price of one, seats won’t last long! Reserve your spot now. You can easily pay via PayPal.

Can’t wait to see you there!

Marc Trudel and the Montreal Magic Jam team

Montreal: Ryan Murray lecture [Jul 10]

From The Montreal Magic Jam:

Monday July 10

Ryan Murray is one of Toronto’s underground magicians specializing in sleight-of-hand with cards. In 2016 he was awarded the Len Cooper Memorial award from the Browser’s Den of Magic for his excellence and dedication towards magic.

He has currently published two books on card magic; Curious Weaving (2018) which expands on the faro shuffle and takes weave shuffles to a whole new level of possibilities, and Natural Card Magic (2021) in which he explores an obscure underground principle that he often uses to fool magicians very very badly. These books have established Ryan as being highly detail oriented when it comes to learning difficult sleight-of-hand.

In this lecture, Ryan will cover some of his own card techniques and routines including some that were previously unpublished. He will also cover his thoughts on his false shuffles and cuts, as well as various faro and weave shuffle techniques. Aside from card magic, he will also finally tip his signature Rubik’s Cube routine that he's been wowing audiences with for many years.

Montreal Magic Jam hosts Jared Kopf virtual lecture [Feb 25]

From the Montreal Magic Jam:

Friday Feb 25th

Jared Kopf performs magic and interprets symbols all over the world. Sometimes, he and a company of
wizards create practical effects for plays, films, and TV shows such as “The Eye Ball,” A Ghost Story, and National Geographic’s Breakthrough. Other times, he pretends to be someone else on a stage or in a movie. Once, in Changchun, he found the philosopher’s stone and turned lead into gold. Occasionally, he reads the tarot for free outside a cafĂ© on Greenville Avenue, just down the street from his home in Dallas, Texas where he lives with the sorceress Elayna Mitchell and their son Martin, who draws people’s dreams in a notebook.

What: Conférence Michel Huot
When: Lundi le 29 novembre, 19h00 (7pm)
Where:  6546 Rue St-Hubert, MontrĂ©al, QC H2S 2M3

The cold weather has finally arrived in Montreal, but it's not all bad news. On top of having a couple special online events schedules in the near future, for the first time, in a very long time we'll be having an in-person event, a lecture from hometown favorite  Michel Huot. En plus, la confĂ©rence sera en français.

Michel is a remarkable performer in English, but even better in his native French, so we figured it would be a great opportunity to see him at his finest.

For those of you who are less adept at the language, Michel will be happy to translate to English as needed throughout the lecture.

With over 25 years of performing under his belt, Michel knows a thing or two about the craft. The man behind best-selling tricks like Priceless, and Socks will be sharing his creations with us, as well as the real secrets of professional magic. I think you'll really want to pay attention to what he has to say.

Of course, we'll have to do a vaccination check and follow Quebec health guidelines so spots will be limited. So please don't wait to register, especially since you can save 10 bucks while you're at it.

Montreal: Jared Kopf lecture and show

From the Montreal Magic Jam:
Lecture: Wed Oct 23
Show: Sun Oct 27

Jared Kopf is one of magic’s finest artists. As a young man, he built a reputation on his flawless technique and massive repertoire of classics, executed to perfection. It didn’t hurt that he studied under master magicians Bob White and Johnny Thompson. Over the ensuing years, he’s also proven himself to be a master performer, and is considered among the cognoscenti as one of the greatest magicians of his generation.

His lectures always cover a variety of topics:sleight-of-hand card and coin magic, classical magic (Cups & Balls, Linking Rings, etc.), mentalism, and “readings” with various symbols, especially the Tarot de Marseille. The lecture’s thesis argues for a unified theory of Magic as a natural phenomenon.

Jared has done incarnations of this ever-evolving lecture for Conjuring Arts University and across North America, Europe, China, Hong Kong, and Japan, spreading the word that Magic is real—even the fake kind.

So come join us and spend some time with Jared Kopf. We’re happy to have him to lecture, a show, a workshop, as well as one special very limited intimate event that you’ll only hear about if you’re on our mailing list.

Montreal: Alfredo Marchese (Magic Alan) lecture

From Montreal Magic Jam:
Wed Sept 27 at 7pm

Argentinian magician Alfredo Marchese (known simply as Magic Alan) has been a professional for over 35 years, working all kinds of environments and traveling all over the world.

A student of the maestro Juan Tamariz, he performs in most of Tamariz’s theatre shows performing a wide variety of material from the spirit cabinet to the Chinese linking rings.

His lecture for us will focus on what he calls “Vertical Card Magic” that can be close-up, in parlour and on the stage, including other visual props and a wide variety of effects (not just your standard pick-a-card tricks).

Of course all this with a combination of clever modern methods. And of course as a student of Tamariz, it wouldn’t be complete with explanations of the psychology behind the tricks and magic performance in general based on his personal experience and of course the work of Tamariz and Ascanio, with am emphasis on these main points
-EFFECT
-EMOTION
-SURPRISE
-SITUATIONAL COMEDY
-VARIETY

Perhaps a relative unknown in our part of the world, he is well-respected throughout Spain and his native South America . Roberto Giobbi, Dani DaOrtiz and Juan Tamariz all sing his praises, and that’s enough to make any magician sit up and pay attention to what he has to say.
