Montreal: Paul Vigil workshop, lecture and show

From Montreal Magic Jam:
LECTURE: Sunday March 4th at The Comedy Nest
SHOW: Tuesday March 6th at Theatre Mainline

UPDATE: Paul Vigil is also doing a workshop the evening of Saturday March 3rd.

Paul Vigil is one of the magic’s most accomplished performers. Since becoming a magician at the age of 5, Paul has gone on to become an award winning lecturer, a regular performer at The Magic Castle in LA, and the star of his own show in Las Vegas. Paul has performed all over the world and has also made numerous appearances on television, including most recently Penn and Teller’s “Fool Us!”

Paul Vigil is the author of numerous manuscripts, including his latest book “The Doors of Deception.” His first book “Classic Fantastic” has long sold out, and his new tome contains not just well-thought-out routines from his repertoire but shows how he constructs an act. It may very well sell out before he makes his way to Montreal, but he will share many of the lessons from this book with you on Sunday March 4th.

Paul Vigil’s full evening show “Magic, Mind Reading, and Mystery” is one of the most sought after, and highly reviewed shows in all of Las Vegas. He performed it in Toronto in December to a sell-out crowd and we’re happy to bring it here to Montreal for a one-night-only performance on Tuesday March 6th. The Mainline’s raked seating will ensure everybody will get the best view of the performance.

Montreal: Dr. Amir Raz to talk about hypnosis, magic and placebos in medicine

Dr. Amir Raz will be giving his lecture, "The Placebo Effect," on his Oct. 23 lecture at this year’s Trottier Public Science Symposium “Mind Matters: The Body-Mind Connection.”

From the article "Trottier Symposium speaker Dr. Amir Raz on hypnosis, magic and placebos in medicine" McGill Reporter:
Before he was a psychiatry professor and researcher, Amir Raz was a magician — and the two occupations aren’t as different as you might think. As Canada Research Chair in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Attention, Dr. Raz is interested in deception and how people’s physiology is influenced by their expectations of what is about to happen.

Montreal: Alfredo Marchese (Magic Alan) lecture

From Montreal Magic Jam:
Wed Sept 27 at 7pm

Argentinian magician Alfredo Marchese (known simply as Magic Alan) has been a professional for over 35 years, working all kinds of environments and traveling all over the world.

A student of the maestro Juan Tamariz, he performs in most of Tamariz’s theatre shows performing a wide variety of material from the spirit cabinet to the Chinese linking rings.

His lecture for us will focus on what he calls “Vertical Card Magic” that can be close-up, in parlour and on the stage, including other visual props and a wide variety of effects (not just your standard pick-a-card tricks).

Of course all this with a combination of clever modern methods. And of course as a student of Tamariz, it wouldn’t be complete with explanations of the psychology behind the tricks and magic performance in general based on his personal experience and of course the work of Tamariz and Ascanio, with am emphasis on these main points
-EFFECT
-EMOTION
-SURPRISE
-SITUATIONAL COMEDY
-VARIETY

Perhaps a relative unknown in our part of the world, he is well-respected throughout Spain and his native South America . Roberto Giobbi, Dani DaOrtiz and Juan Tamariz all sing his praises, and that’s enough to make any magician sit up and pay attention to what he has to say.
