Niagara’s newest cancer survivor is hoping to get back to his regular weight soon. About 500 pounds or so.
Six and a half months ago, Niagara Falls magician Greg Frewin noticed his nine-year-old Siberian tiger Boomer acting a bit strange. Something on his right side was bugging him.
Closer inspection revealed a lesion which seemed to grow over the next week. Boomer, one of four tigers performing in his nightly magic show, was clearly agitated.
“We could tell he was licking it,” says Frewin. “He was trying to keep it clean. Something was not right.”
After a check with the vet, Boomer was sedated and the lesion cut open, which revealed “signs of a tumour.” A sample was analyzed and the bad news arrived shortly after – Boomer had cancer.

We all know that wild tigers face extinction every single day from poaching and habitat loss. But what you may not realize is they can also get cancer. And there’s one cancer-stricken tiger in Niagara Falls that’s living a much healthier life than he would have in the wild thanks to his handlers.
In the wild, tigers live for about fourteen years. That number is doubled in captivity. Despite not being in a zoo, Boomer the tiger is one of those big cats who’s life was preserved thanks to the help of the people around him.

So, with the help of Greg’s expert hands, Dan and I went on a grand adventure of illusion. Our minds were blown. The article goes on to describe the wonderful work Greg does with the local food bank and soup kitchen. Those efforts are especially important at this time of year.
The show is an entertaining mixture of magic, music and comedy. During the course of the performance, Dan and I kept looking at each other with our mouths firmly agape. The experience was literally jaw-dropping. Our rational brains couldn’t wrap around how he was carrying out these spectacular feats of illusion.

Note to Ontario families: We used a coupon for a free child's admission (as long as we paid for an adult admission) from our "Ontario 2012 Fun Pass" booklet which was given to us at the end of the school year. The conservatory was FABULOUS! Highly recommended!
Tip: Arrive as early as you can to ensure good seating (the box office will let you know what time is best).
Note to parents: Bring along some distractions for little ones (such as crayons with paper, playing cards, books, quiet hand-held video games etc.) to help pass the time between arriving for the best seating and show time. We were lucky that the delightful couple from the Rochester area, kindly joined us in a game of Crazy Eight Countdown and the time flew by!
If you think your child would be scared sitting right up close to the tigers at level one, level two offers an equally good view of the stage along with the sense of a physical barrier between you and the big cats.
Note to parents: Some of the kids 8 and under in our area found the short a little scary at times.
Note to parents of young children: The last big illusion, which I'll refer to as the Assistants' Revenge, was a little tense for some of the younger children. But it ended with happy faces!

HULICK: Which award surprised you the most?
FREWIN: Well, to be honest with you, there are several that are kind of important to me, but the one that surprised me the most was the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM). They have a contest every year with magicians from all over the world. They give away a first, second and third prize but they also give away a gold medal, which isn’t given out every year. When I won, it was the fifth one ever in about 80 years. I think it’s now up to seven or eight. That was the surprise one I look at now and appreciate the most.
