How to date a deck of (USPC) playing cards

ICYMI Lee Asher Tweeted: Oct 14th -17th @52PlusJokerClub will hold their annual playingcard collecting convention virtually- free to all. YOU ARE INVITED!

From Lee Asher's blog:

How Old Is Your Deck?

The following material, designed to assist collectors in dating their U.S. decks, is produced here courtesy of the 52 Plus Joker Organization. It appeared originally in an article by Margery Griffith, then curator of the United States Playing Card Co. Museum in Cincinnati, in their quarterly bulletin 'CLEAR THE DECKS' in April 1991.

Find Your Ace of Spades

Like knowing the grade of your cards, a dating aid can be very useful. For decks manufactured by United States Playing Card Co., a dating code was placed on the Ace of Spades at time of manufacture. The code first came into use in 1904 and it applies only to Aces of Spades that bear a letter plus a four digit number. Combinations with fewer numbers have no meaning for collectors.

Right from the beginning in 1904, the same codes were used by National Playing Card Co. and New York Consolidated Card Co., subsidiaries by then of USPC. Andrew Dougherty and Russell Playing Card Co. also used these codes, as they became part of USPC in 1907 and 1929 respectively.

Convention Auction 2020 For those who have not yet received it, the September 2020 issue of “Clear the Decks,” the newsletter of 52 Plus Joker, has come out. All members of 52 Plus Joker should be receiving their copies within the next few days. Prominent in this issue is the listing for 49 playing card lots, shown above, consigned to the online auction that will take place during the club’s virtual convention on 14-17 October. Details on the auction, and the convention, will be available on the website, www.52plusjoker.org. This year’s auction promises to be spectacular. The 49 lots shown are just a sampling of what will be available. But even just this sampling includes decks that are seldom seen for sale, such as the original Tiffany Harlequin transformation deck from 1879, the Piatnik Crimean War deck, circa 1858, and the New York Consolidated Card Company’s 1897 Mediaeval deck (considered the most beautiful deck they ever issued). More details and more auction lots are promised to come. Stay tuned. #playingcards #playingcardart #playingcarddesign #playingcardphotography #playingcardcollecting #playingcardcollections

Did you know that Harry Potter performed in Canada in 1858?

Technically, not Canada.  Yet.  But in what is now Canada.

From the August 28th, 2015 post "Harry Potter and Itinerant Entertainment in Dundas" by Emily Herron from the Dundas Museum:
On May 21st 1858, there appeared in the Dundas True Banner and Wentworth Chronicle, an advertisement. This advertisement would be exciting for readers — especially young readers — today. Why? It announced that Harry Potter was coming to Dundas! And Harry Potter was a magician, known as the original American Wizard! The ad reported that Harry Potter would entertain audiences at the Town Hall the next night. Modern readers would be surprised — and delighted — to read of Harry Potter in a 19th century Dundas newspaper. While this appears to be a coincidence, we want to know more about this performer.

First magic performance in Canada?

Updated August 6th to add this find by Lee Asher:

Updated at 8:45am to add this find by Joe Culpepper:

--

Lee Asher asked an interesting question on Twitter Monday morning.
What is the name of the first magician to perform in Canada?

Was it Maginnis (circa 1875) as reported in The Canadian Encyclopedia?
Technically it could be yes, as The Dominion of Canada was officially born on July 1, 1867.  But lets expand the question to the first magician to perform in what is now considered Canada.

Was it MacAlister performing in Montreal in 1854 as shown by this clipping in the Ottawa Daily Citizen?

No.

How about Philippe in Quebec City September 30th in 1846?

Wrong again.

From an Ottawa Daily Citizen article published on May 22nd in 1852, discussion a performance by a Signor Blitz:

So far the earliest named and documented magic performance in what is now Canada, goes to Mons. Desage, as referenced in the Kingston Chronicle and Gazette December 30 1835.

There's evidence of an unnamed woman doing magic in Kingston in 1835!

And ventriloquists too.

People were complaining about magicians as early as the January 21st 1805 edition of the Quebec Mercury:

A final very important note from Joe Culpepper:

With thanks to Lee Asher for asking this question and Bill Mullins and Joe Culpepper for their hard work and sharing their findings!

Kickstarter: Authentic Jerry's Nugget Playing Cards

With over 27 day still to go, this Kickstarter has already raised over $400,000 Cdn!

From Kickstarter:
In 1970, Jerry's Nugget Casino printed what would become one of the most collectible playing card decks ever manufactured by United States Playing Card Company (USPCC). They made them for the tables but opted not to use them and put them in storage for 20 years! Almost thirty years ago they started selling them in their gift store with the final price of $2 a deck!
'
Playing card expert, Lee Asher, recognized the unique quality and feel of these cards and began evangelizing about them. In due course, Jerry's Nugget playing cards became legendary.

By the fall of 1999, these cards sold out, yet the demand continued to grow. Today, authentic Jerry’s Nugget cards are among the most desirable and expensive modern decks on the market.

But finding an authentic deck presents a real challenge. Due to their considerable value and the immense demand, knockoffs proliferate eBay and other outlets.

This prompted Asher to suggest Expert Playing Card Company try and get the exclusive license to print these iconic decks again. And after more than three years of pursuit and negotiation, we finally made a deal with Jerry's Nugget Casino!

Skip to the bottom of this post to watch Lee's video.

ICYMI...

From the June 4th article "Cartamundi to acquire The United States Playing Card Company" from Cartamundi:
Turnhout, June 4, 2019 – The Belgian privately owned group Cartamundi has signed an agreement to buy The United States Playing Card Company (USPC) from its parent company Newell Brands. The acclaimed playing cards maker’s focus is on North America and Spain. Through this acquisition, Cartamundi continues to invest in the global entertainment market.

The United States Playing Card Company, owner of the iconic brands such as Bicycle®, Bee®, Hoyle® and Fournier®, is the global standard within the world of playing cards. The business employs over 350 people and has manufacturing facilities in the U.S. city of Erlanger (Kentucky) and the Spanish city of Vitoria (Álava). In 2018 USPC realized net sales of approximately 112 million US dollars.
