Montreal: Alfredo Marchese (Magic Alan) lecture

From Montreal Magic Jam:
Wed Sept 27 at 7pm

Argentinian magician Alfredo Marchese (known simply as Magic Alan) has been a professional for over 35 years, working all kinds of environments and traveling all over the world.

A student of the maestro Juan Tamariz, he performs in most of Tamariz’s theatre shows performing a wide variety of material from the spirit cabinet to the Chinese linking rings.

His lecture for us will focus on what he calls “Vertical Card Magic” that can be close-up, in parlour and on the stage, including other visual props and a wide variety of effects (not just your standard pick-a-card tricks).

Of course all this with a combination of clever modern methods. And of course as a student of Tamariz, it wouldn’t be complete with explanations of the psychology behind the tricks and magic performance in general based on his personal experience and of course the work of Tamariz and Ascanio, with am emphasis on these main points
-EFFECT
-EMOTION
-SURPRISE
-SITUATIONAL COMEDY
-VARIETY

Perhaps a relative unknown in our part of the world, he is well-respected throughout Spain and his native South America . Roberto Giobbi, Dani DaOrtiz and Juan Tamariz all sing his praises, and that’s enough to make any magician sit up and pay attention to what he has to say.

“Illusions – The Art of Magic” an exhibition featuring the art of illusions is on view at McCord Museum, Québec.

The selection of works on display features magic show posters not exhibited before. These posters date back to the 1880s till 1930s. The exhibit consists of 71 chromolithographs and wood engravings few of them in large formats and highlights some of the most popular faces of the period such as Herrmann, Kellar, Chung Ling Soo, Thurston, and Houdini. The exhibit draws from the Allan Slaight Collection, acquired by the museum in 2015.  ‘Illusions – The Art of Magic’ looks at the Golden Age of Magic by creating an immersive and spell binding environment through sights, sounds, and colors.

McCord Museum: Magic, music, and dance

From Perfect Magic:
If you haven’t been to the McCord Museum this summer it’s worth going to. Not your usual museum exhibition. It’s called ILLUSIONS – The Art of Magic and Luc Langevin is the ambassador of the exhibit. It’s the Allan Slaight collection, which was acquired by the McCord with the help of the Emmanuelle Gattuso Foundation.  A tip of the Top Hat to the people who designed it.. Phil and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We were invited by magician Dr. Joe Culpepper, magician, scholar, consultant and friend and customer of Perfect Magic. Before the guided tour, we were treated to a magic show, in a lovely little theatre there, given by the young students, who attended the McCord Museum Camp, Abracadabra, who were guided and taught by Joe and the counsellors. The kids did a great job and they all knew how to take a bow when the applause came.

So what’s the link between magic and music?

Montreal: "Illusions" at the McCord Museum

From the McCord Museum:
26 MAY 2017 — 7 JANUARY 2018

ILLUSIONS: THE ART OF MAGICThe exhibition will take on the period of magic shows’ golden age and its advertising and promotional mechanisms that relied on phantasmagoric imagery. A selection of breathtaking posters, mostly dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, will retrace the social history of this still active phenomenon. These posters, halfway between art and advertisement, are magnificent, large format chromolithographs that immortalise the magicians and the acts that marked the world of modern magic.

Festival de magie: The panel that reads your thoughts

The Festival de magie de Québec starts on Thursday.  I am a big fan of their creative, dynamic, and often interactive advertising campaigns.  In 2011 it was this magical billboard. In 2012, it was "la disparition."  In 2013, "pouvoirs magiques."   For 2014, "le balai magique."  This one, "le magicien" (in English: The Magician) was released in August of 2015.  And last year was "The Mysterious Billboard."

For this year, have a look at "The panel that reads your thoughts."

Montreal: Axel Hecklau lecture

If you can't make it to the Ring 17 event, you can catch the Axel Hecklau lecture in Montreal.

From the Montreal Magic Jam:
Monday April 3rd

Axel Hecklau is one of the most creative magic minds of Germany. He has lectured more than 200 times in more than 15 countries worldwide (including at FFFF, the Magic Castle and at FISM) and now he’s coming to Montreal. Axel will be presenting his latest creations and improved effects for stage, parlour and close-up situations, including:
  • Newsflash 2.0: This is the newspaper tear on steroids. He’s taken an old chestnut and taken it to a whole other level. Gene Anderson calls this “Absolutely brilliant”
  • Just a Cup: A chop cup routine that isn’t. Axel’s diabolical chop cup routine doesn’t even use a chop cup! So no banging necessary, it can be done completely surrounded, is completely examinable and many phases can be performed right in the spectator’s hand.
  • Destiny – it´s your choice: A stand-up piece that starts off as prediction and ends up as something far more magical. Packs small but plays very big. Very visual, perfect for parlour or stage.
  • Two-Fusion : Axel Hecklau has taken the T & R card to a new practical, visual and emotional level. If you like Anniversary Waltz, you’ll LOVE this.
So please come join us on Monday April 3rd at the Mainline Gallery (just a block south of the Mainline Theatre) to watch one of Germany’s finest magicians and you’ll quickly see why Axel is FISM Europe’s 2017 Champion of Parlour Magic.

44th Magic Collectors Weekend Guests of Honour

From Magicana:
With the 44th Magic Collectors Weekend only two months away, we are pleased announce our Guests of Honor for the Weekend—William (Bill) Kalush and Michael (Micky) Hades.

It may be trite to say, but it is true. With accomplishments so rich, and spanning so many decades, our Guests of Honor need little introduction. Both, in many ways, have changed the course of magic history, particularly for magic collectors and historians.
