Canada's Got Talent: Getting to know Magic Ben

Next in the the series of Canada's Got Talent contestants is Whitehorse's / Saskatoon's Magic Ben!

Who inspires you that is not a magician?

My father, Hypnotist Corrie J and Dwayne The Rock Johnson. They are all extremely hard workers and I look up to that every day.

What is your first memory of magic?

I was 9 years old the first time I saw a magician, it was at my parents’ wedding. I remember seeing him perform a linking rings routine and I ran to my dad and asked him how he’d done it. My dad told me that if I wanted to know, I'd have to become a magician. The next day I was playing with a deck of cards and it brought us here!

Who from the magic community inspires you?

Le Grand Sahibe, Joan Caesar, Hiawatha Johnson Jr. Shawn Farquhar, David Blaine, Dani Daortiz, Juan Tamariz. I could name so many!

Was there anyone or anything instrumental to you becoming a magician?

I started competing at the Festival de Magie de Quebec in 2014 and was a finalist 6 years in a row. That and attending Tannen's Magic Camp in 2018 sealed the deal for me. Living in the arctic comes with its challenges and learning magic was one of them.

Did you ever get discouraged and think about quitting magic?

I was 6 months old when my parents decided to move to a small fly-in and fly-out Inuit community in the Canadian arctic.  I was the only “white kid” and I grew up learning their language and culture. Magic helped me figure out my identity, who I am,  and overcome the challenges of living so remotely. Sometimes I'd quit, but it usually was only for about 2 hours!

Do you have any or pre-show rituals?

Two things could happen: If I am lucky enough to eat some country food from where I come from (Beluga, seal, caribou, arctic char etc.) it would be that or I will listen to some Coldplay.

What inspired you to be a part of this season of Canada's Got Talent?

I represent hope and inspiration to all the youth of the northern fly-in and fly-out communities that no matter where you come from in life, anything is possible. That is why I'm on Canada's Got Talent, for my friends up north!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

I speak three languages: French, English and Inuktitut. I am hoping to be a bridge linking all Canadians together through my experiences living North, East and West. I once did a show at -48, I think that makes me the Magician of the North!

Thank you Ben, for making the time to answer our questions!  Break a leg on CGT!

Learn more about Ben at his website MagicWithBen.com or follow him on Instagram.

Was that Ben's smiling face at the end of last week's episode?  Tune in tomorrow to find out!

It’s a gem that draws people from all around the region into our city. And Shawn himself? Well, he’s an all-around good guy – just ask the folks he saved from a devastating apartment fire once upon a time in New Westminster. He spoke to reporter Julie MacLellan in June.

FISM 2022 in CBC News

From the July 29th upload "World’s best magicians gather in Canada for championship" by CBC News: The National:

From the July 28th article "The best magicians in the world are gathering in Canada this week" by Joseph Pugh at the CBC:

Two Canadians are competing this year, including Yannick Lacroix from Quebec and Cobalt, who will be competing in the close-up card magic category.

"I'm excitedly terrified," Cobalt told CBC News. He qualified for the championship after competing in an event last fall for the first time.

The Toronto-based magician says there is added stress and excitement when thinking about the audience.

"It's literally every great magician I grew up reading about … or ask[ed] for an autograph who's going to be in there now watching me do this act."

There's a lot on the line for the magicians, according to Canadian illusionist Greg Frewin.

"If you place even in the top three of this competition, your life changes," he says.

Frewin speaks from experience having won first place in the general magic category at the 1994 world championships in Yokohama, Japan. He currently performs shows at the Greg Frewin theatre in Niagara Falls, Ont., and has been training the next generation of magicians. One of his students, Ding Yang of China, is also competing at FISM.

"I can't give away what she does, but I will say this, there is one part of her act that nobody, male or female, has ever done and probably won't do for a long time because of the skill level and the skill set besides magic that it takes."

Kickstarter: Shawn Farquhar's Hidden Wonders Playing Cards

From the Shawn Farquhar Hidden Wonders Playing Cards Kickstarter:

When I was young I discovered Stud playing cards that were made by Walgreens. They quickly became my favourite, but sadly they have changed.  In my quest to find a perfect deck of cards I have collected more than 3000!  I was looking for a classic look to the back, a deep elegant rich colors for the court cards as I feel the bright yellow and blues makes the cards look better suited for a Carnival than an elegant lounge.  I didn't want to change the classic art of the court cards, as the common person recognizes them and accepts them easily, but I did want to add some class.

Since I was unable to find a deck I loved, I've decided to make my own!

This is where you come in and hopefully agree.  If you are looking for a classic deck of cards with thin crushed stock that is traditionally cut to make doing a Faro shuffle with the cards face down easy... then this is the deck for you!  The deck will be fifty-four cards in an awesome tuck box, with individually numbered seals.

Magicians in the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame

From the October 15th Facebook post by Shawn Farquhar:

I was super impressed to learn there are three magicians in the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame!   Peter Rolston, Leon Mandrake, and Francis Martineau. I had the honour and pleasure of knowing all three of these amazing magicians. The search also brought up Ray Buchanan who was an amazing costume designer who worked with Mandrake. Sadly, I learned Ray just recently passed due to Covid.  He was a delightful and talented human.

Session with Shawn [May 16]

From the May 1st Facebook post by Shawn Faquhar:

On January 3rd I held my last Session with Shawn and at that time I promised I would do another soon. Okay, time slipped away on me and we're already in May! I am once again offering a Session with Shawn on May 16th at 1:00 PM PDT, that's 4:00 PM EDT and 10:00 PM CET.

For the first time ever I am including $30 in downloads as part of the Session. If you had wanted to attend and weren't able to because the previous ones all sold out in days... here's your chance.

To be clear, this is not a performance, nor is it a scripted lecture. This is a hands on Session where I will share many of my favourite effects, current and unpublished as well!
You can find out more at the ticketing page which is in Canadian funds.  Tickets are $40 Canadian and include $30 US in downloads... kind of a deal. 😉

Most likely the last time I will be doing this kind of virtual session, FYI.
