Montreal: Pit Hartling lecture [July 18]

From the Montreal Magic Jam:

Pit Hartling is Germany’s most successful magician in the weight-class under 130 pounds. Pit is part of Germany’s Flicking Fingers group, he was the youngest member of the famous Escuela Magica de Madrid and won Lecturer of the Year from the Academy of Magical Arts in Hollywood.

Internationally, Pit is best known for his fun and clever style of card magic as well as his Little Green Lecture notes and his critically acclaimed books Card Fictions and In Order to Amaze.

In this entertaining show-lecture Pit discusses card effects from his professional repertoire. He covers not only the working of the tricks themselves, but also general principles of method and presentation that can be used in any magic context. There will be a wide variety of plots and effects, with methods ranging from sleight of hand and clever use of mathematical and psychological strategies to some routines that are entirely sleight-free.

Finally, Pit will explain how to become rich and sexy, as well as the correct use of false promises.

Hugues Sarra-Bournet at the Montreal Fringe [June 11 - 19]

From the may 30th article "Brownstein: Montreal Fringe Festival all grown up, but still out there" by Bill Brownstein in the Montreal Gazette:

Sarra-Bournet, a former Cirque du Soleil acrobat, is in rehearsal mode at Fringe headquarters at the Mainline Theatre. Following a clowning/dancing/juggling routine, Sarra-Bournet dons his magic chapeau and a cape — actually a giant eco-friendly garbage bag — and bedazzles those of us in attendance with a mind-blowing, sleight of hand card trick that would also suggest he has X-ray vision.

“Some people say clowns have no business doing magic, but I like to break the rules, trying to do everything I can,” says the Montrealer performing in his second Fringe. “I like to think of myself as a generalist. My character Mario goes to a talent contest every year, but never succeeds at any particular talent. So he’s always preparing something else. Sadly, he’s really not so good at anything.”

Disagree. From what we can see, this clown is a master of many métiers.

Montreal: Michel Huot lecture [Nov 29]

Purchase tickets to this event at Montreal Magic Jam.

From the Montreal Magic Jam newsletter:

What: Conférence Michel Huot
When: Lundi le 29 novembre, 19h00 (7pm)
Where:  6546 Rue St-Hubert, Montréal, QC H2S 2M3

The cold weather has finally arrived in Montreal, but it's not all bad news. On top of having a couple special online events schedules in the near future, for the first time, in a very long time we'll be having an in-person event, a lecture from hometown favorite  Michel Huot. En plus, la conférence sera en français.

Michel is a remarkable performer in English, but even better in his native French, so we figured it would be a great opportunity to see him at his finest.

For those of you who are less adept at the language, Michel will be happy to translate to English as needed throughout the lecture.

With over 25 years of performing under his belt, Michel knows a thing or two about the craft. The man behind best-selling tricks like Priceless, and Socks will be sharing his creations with us, as well as the real secrets of professional magic. I think you'll really want to pay attention to what he has to say.

Of course, we'll have to do a vaccination check and follow Quebec health guidelines so spots will be limited. So please don't wait to register, especially since you can save 10 bucks while you're at it.

Joe Culpepper: Magic Languages at Concordia University

From the August 31st blog post at JoeCulpepper.com:

“Engl 398 — Magic Languages: Written, Oral and Visual Traditions of Conjuring” is open for registration at Concordia University’s department of English.

This special topics course examines how individuals express and experience magic through various storytelling media. Texts related to conjuring by Reginald Scot, Shakespeare, Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, Adelaide Herrmann, Jorge Luis Borges and others will be explored with conceptual tools from theories of adaptation, postcolonialism, cinema studies and performance studies. A special emphasis will be placed on the so-called Golden Age of stage conjuring in the West (1880-1930) and how scientific technologies, exoticism, and colonialism from that period are at once present and questioned by contemporary performance today.

Acer and Shuchat shone among the first wave of anglo comics in the early years of the Nest.

“I go way back to the 1920s with Bob Hope,” Acer quips. “Actually, I did my first set at the Nest in 1989 … when we didn’t have microphones and comedians talked through rolled-up paper cones. Okay, I may be misremembering that a little.”

Montreal: Jared Kopf lecture and show

From the Montreal Magic Jam:
Lecture: Wed Oct 23
Show: Sun Oct 27

Jared Kopf is one of magic’s finest artists. As a young man, he built a reputation on his flawless technique and massive repertoire of classics, executed to perfection. It didn’t hurt that he studied under master magicians Bob White and Johnny Thompson. Over the ensuing years, he’s also proven himself to be a master performer, and is considered among the cognoscenti as one of the greatest magicians of his generation.

His lectures always cover a variety of topics:sleight-of-hand card and coin magic, classical magic (Cups & Balls, Linking Rings, etc.), mentalism, and “readings” with various symbols, especially the Tarot de Marseille. The lecture’s thesis argues for a unified theory of Magic as a natural phenomenon.

Jared has done incarnations of this ever-evolving lecture for Conjuring Arts University and across North America, Europe, China, Hong Kong, and Japan, spreading the word that Magic is real—even the fake kind.

So come join us and spend some time with Jared Kopf. We’re happy to have him to lecture, a show, a workshop, as well as one special very limited intimate event that you’ll only hear about if you’re on our mailing list.
