Montreal: Alyx Hilshey lecture [Nov 19]

From the Montreal Magic Jam:

Alyx Hilshey is a full time, working magician who has recently taken the magic world by storm. After 14 years of honing her chops as a street performer, she moved inside, performing at magic venues including The Chicago Magic Lounge, Philadelphia’s Smoke and Mirrors Theater, and the The Magic Castle. She was a regular guest co-star in Washington DC’s highest rated comedy show, The Magic Duel, and she appeared on Season 11 of Penn & Teller: Fool Us.

After spending two years as a resident theme park magician, she now primarily works as a family entertainer with a growing business in the corporate market. She has lectured all across the USA and this will be her debut lecture in Canada.

She will discuss street magician tactics and how they can be applied to indoor or festival/fair magic. She will also talk about misdirection techniques including using the body and the gaze. Plus she will give tips for using social media to become a better performer and to propel your career.

Julie Eng awarded the The Magic Circle’s 2024 John Nevil Maskelyne Award

Congratulations Julie!  Well deserved!

From the October 6th Facebook post by Julie Eng:

I am deeply, deeply honoured to be The Magic Circle’s 2024 John Nevil Maskelyne Award recipient for contributions to magic literature. Thank you to Magic Circle President Marvin Berglas and to the officers of the Magic Circle for this incredible acknowledgment and recognition—I am filled with profound joy and gratitude.

Magic has always been part of my life. My father, Tony Eng, involved me in his magic career when I was very young. I trailed after him throughout my childhood; and as I grew into magic, he naturally became my teacher, my mentor. I’ve always been surrounded and inspired by this magnificent art. But never in my wildest dreams did I imagine such a diverse and exciting career in magic—one that has spanned performance to production and, indeed, to publishing.
To join the ranks of past recipients, including so many of my dear friends—I am truly and completely overwhelmed!

This award isn’t a personal achievement; it’s a testament to the collaborative spirit of our magical community. I’d also like to thank Magicana and its board of directors, and my friend and colleague David Ben for their support over all these years.

Specifically, with regards to The Rich Cabinet Collection, I would like to thank the wonderful Dawes family for inviting me into the inner sanctum of Dane Hill— I offer especial thanks to Adrian Dawes, who was a true and devoted collaborator in the Rich Cabinet journey with me!

Most of all, I want to take this moment to recognize and thank our beloved Eddie. From the moment we started this journey together to build a nine-volume set, which is now The Rich Cabinet Collection, he steered us to this final moment with his strong and steady resolve, in his very special warm and gentle way. I will always be forever grateful for his kindness, his friendship, his guiding light.

Now, as I move into my new role as executive director of Genii Enterprises, I am so excited to continue the work in sharing this art we love so very much in creative and dynamic ways!

Thank you so much to the Magic Circle for this incredible honour!

Broken wand: Richard "Ted" Harding

Our sincere condolences to Ted's wife Linda, his family, and his friends at this difficult time.

Visit the "tribute wall" for Ted at Aftercare.org

From the IBM Ring 17 Sid Lorraine Hat and Rabbit Club September 29th newsletter:

Long time Hat and Rabbit Club member Ted Harding, "The Magic Man," passed away at age 85 on July 10, 2024.

Richard “Ted” Harding, affectionately known as the "Magic Man" for his unique ability to blend his love of magic with his deep knowledge of the carpet and floor cleaning industry, passed away peacefully on July 10th 2024 at Sunnybrook Hospital surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ted's journey in the industry began with a simple vision: to revolutionize the way we think about cleaning carpets and floors. With a wand in one hand and a cleaning tool in the other, Ted brought a touch of enchantment to every demonstration, captivating audiences with his seamless integration of magic and professional expertise.

As the founding member of Kleen Kuip Supply Mart Inc., Ted's innovative spirit and dedication to excellence set the foundation for a company that prides itself on integrity, quality, and customer service. His passion was not just in the products he developed and sold, but in the countless hours he spent mentoring others, sharing his wealth of knowledge with anyone eager to learn.

Outside of his professional life, Ted was a beloved family man, and an extraordinary individual who touched the hearts of many. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, innovation, and a magical touch that will be sorely missed.

On the tribute wall Ray Anderson wrote of his friend that Ted had an Elvis type voice, amazing stories and was respected as both a businessman and a magician.

Jeff Pinsky wrote that Ted was a customer of the Browsers Den for over 40 years and was a true gentleman and a pleasure to serve.

Ted is survived by his wife Linda of 39 years and three children
His celebration of life was “A Magical Affair” with the theme being magic.

Ted Harding's magic lives on in the memories he created and the countless lives he touched. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, as we honor the remarkable life of a truly extraordinary man.

“Love is magic, pure and sweet
For it alone makes life complete
And when there’s something hearts would say
Love, like magic, shows the way”
