Toronto: James Alan lecture for Ring 17 [Sep 29]

From IBM Ring 17:

When it comes to magic in Toronto, James Alan has had his hand in every cookie jar you can think of.

Performing for the public, he has created long-running shows including Magic Tonight (2013-2016) and Magic & Martini (2016-2020), produced shows for visiting international performers including Eugene Burger, Dani DaOrtiz and Asi Wind. For the community, he has been actively involved with the important community outreach programs My Magic Hands and Senior Sorcery.

During the unpleasantness, has was busy in the virtual space, creating Bring Magic Home, with over three hundred shows with audiences in twenty countries. His tricks have been featured in Genii and MAGIC Magazine (which included the most complained about trick in that magazine's history), and his writing has been featured in Vanish, MUM, The Linking Ring, Elixir and Magicol. We know him as the distinguished Ex-President of our club and the disgraced Ex-President of That Other Club.

Goodbye to Magic Information Canada (MagicInfo.ca)

Thank you Doug, for your wonderful contributions to the Canadian Magic Community!

From the September 22nd Facebook post by Doug Cuff:

The time has come to say goodbye.

I started a website for Canadian magicians around 20 years ago, but I haven't updated it for the past 3 years. And that matters because one thing that I used to take pride in was that magicinfo.ca kept its links up to date, and listed old, outdated links so that visitors would know they had reached a dead end.

So I've closed the magicinfo.ca website and the associated Twitter account @magicinfo_ca. I'll be closing this Facebook account too, but there is still one thing I want to accomplish before I do that.

Thanks to all of you who used magicinfo.ca over the years and offered feedback.

From MagicInfo.ca:

This website started in the early 2000s as a series of simple bookmarks to Canadian magic shops. Back in those days, there were still great bricks-and-mortar shops like Morrissey's and Perfect Magic. These days, Browser's Den of Magic in Toronto is pretty much all there is left. It's a great shop, and I still buy from Jeff and the team, but one shop doesn't continue a need for this website.

Later on, I kept track of other things: effects that used objects familiar to Canadian audiences, performing magicians, magic shows, magic clubs, magic lessons. I taught myself a lot about CSS and PHP and SQL in keeping this site running. It was fun while it lasted. I hope it was useful to some of you still out there reading this.

The Canadian magic scene still needs a great website, but it has that: Nicole's excellent Canada's Magic site and blog.

This message will remain in place until mid-November 2022, after which magicinfo.ca will be no more.

Goodbye and thank you! (signed) Doug

From the September 15th Instagram post by the Boston Magic Lab:

Pay-what-you-want.

We can't contain our excitement- we're kicking off our season with a virtual show that is accessible outside of the Boston area.

And because of that, we also have the chance to bring on out-of-town guests like co-host @jacque_swan_ , @meriam_alsultan who was recently featured on the Apple TV show #gutsywomen , and our favorite Edmonton-based street artist @jayflairmagic -

along with New England favorites @trismagician, Andrew Neiner, @michaelgranoff, and @justinvaldezmagic (who is making his Magic Lab debut!)

Niagara Falls: Greg Frewin stepping back, Christian Mascia stepping forward

From the September 16th article "After 18 years, Niagara Falls magician Greg Frewin passing on the wand" by John Law at the Niagara Fall Review:

After 18 years of the nightly grind, one of Canada’s most decorated magic men is passing the wand. Sometime over the next month, he will yield the stage to 24-year-old rising star Christian Mascia at his Ellen Avenue theatre.

And while he hesitates using the ‘r’ word — retirement — Frewin says his days of regular performing are winding down. And it took a forced break to convince him.

From the September 20th Facebook post by Greg Frewin Theatre:

"Greg will be coming back from time to time to perform with Christian Mascia but for the most part yes, he is retiring from the stage."

"The new show Wonder will begin October 13, 2022. Hope that is helpful for you. "
