Rod Chow: owner of the World's Narrowest Commercial Building

Updated at 9am to add:

From the May 25th article "Built on a bet. Owner of world-famous Chinatown building says, despite pandemic, he's here to stay"  by Ashley Moliere in the CBC News:

The Jack Chow Insurance building, also known as the Sam Kee building, was built on a bet, according to its owner Rod Chow.

In the early 1900s, businessman Chang Toy bought a standard 30-foot lot at the corner of Pender and Carrall streets.

But the City of Vancouver needed to widen one of the streets, so it expropriated 24 feet of the land leaving him with only six feet.

"No one thought he could do anything with it," said Chow.

...

The structure at 8 West Pender Street is also the world's narrowest commercial building, according to the Guinness Book of World Records

[Guest post] I challenge you!

Support your brick and mortar magic shops!

The following is a guest post from an author who wishes to be known as The Magic Demon.

 --

"I CHALLENGE YOU!"

AN OPEN LETTER
TO ALL MEMBERS OF CANADIAN IBM RINGS
& TO MEMBERS OF CAM
& TO CANADIAN MEMBERS OF SAM:

from The Magic Demon

Exclusive to Canada's Magic

I've always considered you among the elite of magic enthusiasts, hobbyists, amateurs and professionals.

You love the art of magic enough to have joined an organization dedicated to preserving its history, encouraging its present and striving for an even more illustrious future.

I bet most of you have had a positive experience visiting a brick & mortar magic shop once upon a time when you were young. That awesome visit - the first of many, no doubt - cemented what has become a lifelong joy and passion.

And many of you are waiting for the end of our current pandemic before you take a short subway trip - or a long long car ride - or short airplane ride - to your nearest brick and mortar magic shop to once again bask in its unique joys and pleasures.

Doubtless some of you will want to take along your friends or family members and double or triple your fun by sharing the magical experience with them.

But what happens if there are no more brick & mortar magic shops left to visit after the pandemic?

Oh sure, you'll always be able to order from some really great online outlets. But it's never going to be the same experience as standing in person drooling over a display case full of the latest effects, or sharing tips and stories with fellow visiting magic enthusiasts, or enjoying the truly memorable fun created by the proprietors of a real dedicated brick & mortar magic shop.

As you have read on this site, we in Canada are now down to just two dedicated brick & mortar shops. Two to serve a country of almost 38 million! Toronto alone until recently used to have two - and had even more in its distant past.

Unless we act now to safeguard our remaining precious brick & mortar shops there is every chance they may not survive to serve us again when better and more normal days return.

That would make Canada truly less of a magical place.

And so, therefore, I CHALLENGE YOU, to show your love and support for the art of magic and its well-being in this country - as personified in its remaining brick & mortar shops, by making a purchase right now - and later again this year - from either the Browser's Den of Magic in Toronto and/or Clownin' Around on Granville Island in Vancouver BC, whichever is your closest brick & mortar shop.

I am not asking you to do anything I have not already done myself. I have recently purchased a couple books from Clownin' Around, AND a gift certificate from the Browser's Den.

There's still no guarantee that what we all can do will be enough - but at least if we try there's always a good chance. And a good chance is better than no chance at all.

So...

Are you magician-enough to magic-up and accept this challenge?

The future landscape of magic in Canada may well depend upon your actions today.

LATEST STATUS UPDATE: As of this date, the Browser's Den in Ontario is currently only open via phone, email and their website for in-person curbside pick up or snailmail service. Clownin' Around in BC is currently open for a limited number of local-health-authority-region-only in-person mask-wearing customers observing social distance, as well as via phone, email and their website for snailmail service. Check their websites for any further updates and developments.

----

Full Disclosure: The Magic Demon does not work for, nor own any part of, any remaining brick & mortar magic shop - but has spent many happy hours in both and wishes that they may survive the pandemic along with the rest of us.

Thank you The Magic Demon for championing brick and mortar magic shops and for guest posting at Canada's Magic!

Session with Shawn [May 16]

From the May 1st Facebook post by Shawn Faquhar:

On January 3rd I held my last Session with Shawn and at that time I promised I would do another soon. Okay, time slipped away on me and we're already in May! I am once again offering a Session with Shawn on May 16th at 1:00 PM PDT, that's 4:00 PM EDT and 10:00 PM CET.

For the first time ever I am including $30 in downloads as part of the Session. If you had wanted to attend and weren't able to because the previous ones all sold out in days... here's your chance.

To be clear, this is not a performance, nor is it a scripted lecture. This is a hands on Session where I will share many of my favourite effects, current and unpublished as well!
You can find out more at the ticketing page which is in Canadian funds.  Tickets are $40 Canadian and include $30 US in downloads... kind of a deal. 😉

Most likely the last time I will be doing this kind of virtual session, FYI.

Broken wand: Henri Abdulovski

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Henri Abdulovski.  We will miss Henri's kindness, friendship, and his ever-present smile.

Our sincere condolences to Henri's family and friends.

--

From Gordon Precious:

Our gentle, kind confrere, Henri Abdulovski, died in Etobicoke General Hospital on May 4, 2021. Henri suffered a serious stroke at home just over one week ago, from which he never recovered full consciousness.

Henri was born in Macedonia on April 10, 1942.

In his teens and early twenties, Henri became an outstanding guitarist and member of a band that toured Europe.

Henri moved to Paris, France in his 20s, where he learned his trade as a top coiffeur of women and men – and he also learned the French language.

In 1968 Henri moved to Quebec City, where he was “bitten by the Magic Bug”. In a short time, he was engaged by a Quebec TV station to perform a weekly magic show. His best friend in Quebec was Gary Ouellet, the prominent Canadian lawyer who was world-renowned for his contribution to magic and TV magic shows by great magicians.

Henry met and married his wife in Quebec and they moved to Toronto in 1978. Henri opened a fine women’s and men’s hair salon which became very successful. He had a lovely home built and he and his wife raised two lovely children.

Henri was a long-term member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and was proud to be a member of the Order of Merlin.

Henri loved attending magic conventions all over North America - but his favourite of all was the annual MAWNY at Batavia, N.Y.

Henri was also a good friend of Ken Klosterman, and was more than once a guest of Klosterman at his estates and famous magic collection (Klosterman bought several of Henri’s own magic collection).

Henri was a regular attendee of Toronto’s IBM Ring 17, the Sid Lorraine Hat & Rabbit Club and for years sold the lottery tickets for the club during intermission.

Henri’s wife died several years ago but he is survived by his daughter, son and grandson.

Henri had made arrangements for his body to be given to the Department of Anatomy, School of Medicine, University of Toronto, for medical research.

Henri loved magic to the very end – he practiced old and new effects every day and loved to show them to customers and staff of his local coffee shop, and to his clique of local magician friends.

Henri will be sorrowfully missed by his many friends in magic.

--

Thank you Gordon, for sharing this beautiful write-up about Henri's magical life.

Ben Proudfoot's Oscar nomination

"... his Oscar nominated movie, it is free on Vimeo: 'A Concerto is a Conversation'."

From the April 23rd article "Trip to the Oscars a ray of sunshine for Canada's Ben Proudfoot after 'very dark year'" by Jackson Weaver at the CBC:

Ben Proudfoot's short documentary is headed to the Oscars, and so is he — in the midst of pandemic-related upheaval in the industry and a major shift in how award shows connect with their guests and audiences.

The Halifax director is nominated alongside co-director Kris Bowers for A Concerto is a Conversation, their 13-minute feature about Bowers's grandfather, Horace Bowers, and the discrimination he faced as he escaped the Jim Crow South.
